IPS News for You

October 2019

Big picture

Dear Parents and Friends of IPS,

It is hard to believe that we are in the month of October! A new school year presents opportunities for various beginnings-new classes, new faces, and new material. It is a pleasure to be your principal and I welcome you to a new school year!

Our first PTO meeting was held, and the attendance was great! A special thanks to all the members and committee heads of PTO. Thanks for the countless hours of hard work from everyone. I hope that families new to IPS will join our PTO, support our school, and become a part of the positive energy that supports our children in so many ways.

We have had some wonderful events like National Anthem and 9/11 Remembrance Day, Buddy Breakfast, and hosted over 500 grandparents during Grandparents Day! We have some wonderful events coming up as well. Conferences will be on Thursday, October 17th and November 14th. The annual Party for a Purpose will take place on Saturday, October 19th at Pokrova Party Center in Seven Hills from 6:00 PM-11:00 PM. I look forward to this evening with our IPS families and raising money for student resources, specifically Makerspace items.

We are off to a great start and are excited for a wonderful year! Please feel free to contact me at the school office or via email (tebert@independence.k12.oh.us) if you have any questions or concerns. On behalf of the entire IPS Staff, I wish you and your family an excellent school year with us.

TJ Ebert, Principal

This year we have revamped our IPride Program and we are so very excited about it!

Our new expectations are: PRIDE

I-Stands for I Am

What else is new?

Blue TIckets: These have replaced our smileys but will act in the same way. Every student has the opportunity to earn a blue ticket for showing one of our PRIDE expectations. Students then collect and save their blue tickets to turn in for prizes at the school store! The store should be opening soon and will be run by PTO volunteers! A big thank you to all of them!

Golden Tickets: Does your child want to have the opportunity to win "Lunch of a Lifetime" with Mr. Ebert??? Here's how.... Each staff member who works inside IPS has 5 GOLDEN tickets to pass out per month. These tickets go to students who go above and beyond and exhibit our PRIDE characteristics all the time. Golden tickets are then placed into grade level boxes for a drawing at a chance to win "Lunch of a Lifetime" with Mr. Ebert. Two students from every grade will be chosen at our monthly IPride Assemblies. :)

Student of the Month: Name change from Citizen of the Month. One student per grade level will be announced at our monthly IPRIDE assemblies as our Students of the Month. Students can only receive this award one time during their IPS career.

PRIDE PUZZLES: Each homeroom class has a PRIDE Puzzle that consists of 15 pieces. Every time they receive a class compliment from ANOTHER teacher/staff member, they are to add one piece to their puzzle. Once the puzzle is completed, the class will vote on a class prize given by their teacher!

We are so excited about our New and Improved Pride Program. Please help us in reminding our students of all the wonderful things they can earn by being an IPRIDE Kid! Every morning we recite the IPride Pledge as a school!

I am an I Pride Kid

I'm Positive, Respectful

Dependable. Empowered

I am an I Pride Kid!

National Anthem Day/Remember 9/11

Independence Primary School students and staff celebrated National Anthem Day and Patriot Day to commemorate 9/11. Scout Pack 297 performed the color guard ceremony and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Ebert gave remarks about unity in the face of tragedy and welcomed many of our city's first responders to the event to express our gratitude for all they do to keep us safe. Members of the 4th-grade class spoke at the event about the history and meaning of The Star-Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful while the IHS Vocal Ensemble joined the IPS student body to sing both songs. Thank you to everyone involved in helping with the event and modeling good citizenship in our school and community.

This program is a Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative. We had approximately 400 fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, and father figures join us at the Primary School for this special event. Everyone loved their time with their special person eating donuts, drinking juice, and enjoying the beautiful morning.

It was a day of fun for grandparents/special persons of all ages. We hosted approximately 500 grandparents/special persons at this amazing event. All special guests were entertained outside at recess enjoying all the fun things kids like to do (playing soccer, shooting baskets, kickball, tetherball, swinging on the swings, etc.). Some even joined in. A good time was had by all!

A special thank you to our PTO for a delicious lunch and beverages. Our guests thoroughly loved the hospitality the PTO had shown.

Party for a Purpose

Last Chance to purchase tickets for our largest annual event, IPS Party for a Purpose! Visit www.IPSPTO.com to RSVP and get your ticket to what is guaranteed to be a FUN NIGHT OUT for the benefit of our students! Invite your friends and family to attend and support our school!

*This year’s funds raised will go towards a MAKERSPACE for IPS Students, and all IPS PTO year-long initiatives*

Why will a Makerspace be great for IPS students? From Principal TJ Ebert:

"A makerspace area would allow our students to be exposed to 21-century skills, and the four C’s - Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication. A makerspace allows for innovation through hands-on experimentation and solving real-world problems. It allows students to experiment and turn failure into a learning experience. The ability to think critically and effectively at a young age helps develop young minds for future success."

Visit www.IPSPTO.com for event information and to purchase your tickets!
