Mrs. Berak's Third Grade News

Here's What We Are Learning
This week during reading workshop we began focusing on our nonfiction unit: Growing Big Ideas and Concepts in nonfiction reading. We began the unit by looking at how author's structure their texts to help inform the reader. We worked on the elements of descriptive, sequential, and compare and contrast text structures.
During writing this week we began our informational writing unit. We first gathered ideas of topics we feel we are an expert at and topics that interest us. From there, we determined our topic that we would like to write our informational piece about. We then wrote long about our topic and tried out different table of contents for these topics. We will be working on these for the next five weeks.
We continued to work on place value this week. We focused on identifying the place value up to the millions. We also spent some time rounding numbers. This coming week we will be focusing on decimals. This often can be a challenging unit for some third graders so, I will send home some extra practice sheets in the homework. In addition to this, we will continue to practice our multiplication math facts.
