Important Information about end of the school year
Distance Learning has required much of us - so much of you - and I am so thankful for the role you have played in partnering with us to positively impact our students’ learning. Thank you!
I'd like to share information about the end of the school year - in particular, the last week of school - Monday, June 1 through Friday, June 5. Instead of having an official “last day of school,” we have decided to do things just a bit differently to close out this school year. Ultimately, we want to provide families — you and your child(ren) — with more flexibility.
To provide families with flexible options during the last week of school, we are establishing Monday, June 1 through Friday, June 5 as a flexible week or “Flex Week” for E-12+ students. Flexing time during these last days of school means that students and families will have 5 full days to accomplish the following important activities:
Participate in a scheduled Google Meet with their peers and teacher as a goodbye or send-off
Catch up on late or missing assignments
Explore optional learning activities to extend and enrich learning (at a minimum, have your child complete a check-in with their teachers, as attendance will be taken during this final week of school)
Engage in end-of-year communications with teachers
Come to school and pick up personal items
Participate in a school-wide car parade or other school-wide goodbye/celebratory experience
Friday, June 5 will be the last day of school for any school-related activities. Sadly, we will say goodbye until next year.
Most importantly, we hope Flex Week will give you a chance to use time in a way that meets your family’s needs.
Additionally, we want to share that teachers will still be in session on Monday and Tuesday, June 8-9. It’s important for you to know we are working hard and thinking creatively about how to meet the needs of our students when school resumes in the fall — whatever that looks like. Designing and creating new ways of ensuring quality education (as informed by guidelines from our state health and education departments) requires Hopkins staff and leaders to push ourselves to pivot, learn, and adapt to new ways of delivering educational experiences for our E-12+ students.
To this end, all Hopkins teachers will be in full-day training on Monday and Tuesday, June 8-9 to learn how to navigate and utilize an important digital tool called Canvas. Canvas is a learning management system which will allow us to deliver curriculum and learning in a variety of ways — in person, remote, and blended. Using this tool, our teachers can collaborate to build World Class student experiences as well as strengthen, adapt or transform their own teaching skills. Seesaw, a platform that most elementary teachers are currently using to deliver instruction during Distance Learning, most likely will still be used in some capacity by many elementary teachers next school year. Our vision is to deliver high quality, student-centered experiences in a variety of modes. We know this educational need is absolutely critical right now and that’s why we are intentionally taking time to engage in this particular professional development. More to come on this topic as we stay in touch with you throughout the summer.
