Mr Bob's Blog
7th June 2020
Hello from the library!
Here are a few events that have taken place this week, which you might have missed
Here are 4 more super interesting things that have happened this week around the world.
Hope for a rare animal
The pangolin is one of the world's most hunted creatures, largely because they are killed both for their meat and for their scales, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.
This week China raised the animal's protected status to the highest level.
We wait to see if the new rules can be enforced.
Less coal during the lockdown
Every country needs to generate power, but burning coal is considered particularly damaging for the environment.
In 2010 40% of England’s electricity came from coal. When Britain went into COVID-19 lockdown, they needed less electricity and the last four remaining plants that burn coal were shut down.
We wait to see if they are reopened.
World Oceans Day
June 8th was World Oceans Day, and the 2020 theme was to promote the idea of turning 30% of our oceans into protected areas.
Sadly, that very week, the USA was considering allowing three protected marine areas (one in the Atlantic and two in the Pacific) to be opened up to the commercial fishing industry and possibly reduced in size.
A dinosaurs last dinner
Researchers have discovered a fossil so well preserved that they can tell what it was eating just before it died! This armoured dinosaur, known as Borealopelta markmitchell, had fossilized fern leaves in its stomach, as well as twigs and stems. Bits of charcoal on some of the fragments were also discovered which suggested the area where it was eating may have recently been damaged by fires.
Wishing everyone a relaxed and happy weekend!
