The island of Kao in the Ha'apai Group is an uninhabited volcanic island and boasts the highest point in Tonga: 3,389 feet . Villagers from nearby islands grow crops in Kao's rich volcanic soil. They may stay there for months at a time. The island's lava rocks are also used in underground ovens.

One village is on the island, and because the island has rich soil other families also farm on it seasonally. Tofua has no ports which makes it difficult to get boats to and from the island.
