Jan. 24, 2021

Dear Robert Hunter families,

We are continuing to work together as a community to brainstorm ideas for school connectedness activities. Thank you to all of our creative families and teachers for your ongoing ideas to create a positive and engaging school experience for our students in spite of the challenges.

This month, we kicked off our 2021 buddy program at RH. Students were partnered together with another class and got to know each other via Zoom. We will continue to have buddy activities each month, as we continue to look for opportunities to help our students feel connected to each other.

Check out this newsletter for more whole school activities coming up. These are certainly difficult times, but we are so thankful for our strong, connected community!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Glaab and Mrs. Braynor

Hybrid Student Reminders

As a safety precaution, our water fountains are not in use. Please ensure you send children to school with water bottles. Also, we try to have children go outside daily for mask breaks and physical activity. Children should be dressed appropriately for cold weather.

New Procedure for Material Pick-Up

For students that are learning virtually, if teachers reach out to you with directions for material pick-up, it is essential that materials are picked up for your children. In an effort to help ensure you have the ability to pick up materials, we are extending our pick-up window from Thursday 9:00am through Friday at 4:00pm. Material bins will be left out in the evening to provide extended hours for families to pick up materials. Please reach out to us if there is another reason why you are not able to pick up materials, so that we can work together and ensure that your child has the materials that he/she needs for school.

Great Kindness Challenge

Next week, we will celebrate the Great Kindness Challenge. Of course, we always value and teach about kindness at Robert Hunter, but next week, we are highlighting what we can do to be kind and challenging our students to do extra acts of kindness. Mrs. Fontanez will be teaching lessons focused on kindness in Counselor Corner. We encourage you to use the following checklist with your children at home:Great Kindness Challenge Checklsit

We will also be celebrating with a district kindness spirit week. Check out the flyer below to see the theme for each day.

Whole School Kindness Project

Our 4th Grade Kindness Crew has also planned a whole school project. They are asking students to write an act of kindness on a snowball that will be put together to make a RH Snowman of Kindness. Please see the flyer HERE for details and for the snowball template. We will also have hard copies of snowball templates at school if you would like to pick one up from the main office. Snowballs are due back to school on Thursday, Jan. 28th.

Igloo Family Challenge

Mrs. Cinquemani has planned an exciting challenge for RH families! Please see the information below! The flyer is also available on Virtual Backpack. We hope many RH families participate!

Mindfulness Initiative

We are excited to announce our new Mindfulness Program and Parent Outreach at Robert Hunter led by Mindfulness teacher, Heather Van Fleet. We are excited to welcome back Heather Van Fleet to Robert Hunter. Ms. Van Fleet has a wealth of background and training with mindfulness practices. Ms. Van Fleet will provide mindfulness for students and staff, beginning with our ESL student population. We will also be extending mindfulness for the whole school population- more information is coming soon!

Mindfulness is a scientifically-based approach to developing focused attention and emotional regulation. Mindfulness means paying attention in the present moment to our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, or surrounding environment. It also includes the intentional nurturing of positive states of mind such as empathy and kindness. Studies find that learning mindfulness benefits students in terms of improved attention, emotion regulation, behavior in school, empathy and understanding of others, social skills, test anxiety, and stress.

Ms. Van Fleet is also providing mindfulness sessions and support for our Robert Hunter staff members. We thank Ms. Van Fleet for supporting the well-being of our amazing teachers and staff!

Kindergarten Round Up

If you have a child turning 5 on or before October 1, 2021 the portal for parents to fill out “pre” registration will open on February 8th. At that time you can enter the preliminary information, after which you will be provided a link to download the PDF of our registration packet. It is that PDF that you will fill out and bring to the school the week of Feb 22-25th between 9-3:30pm. There will be a table outside to drop off the packet of materials.
