A new year...a new motto
Each year at Jamison I pick a school wide theme around which every child, parent, and staff member can rally. This year's theme is "you don't have to...you get to!"
The message I delivered this morning to the student body was centered around this theme. Many of us, at times, take for granted so many of the wonderful things life hands us in a negative way. We get consumed with how busy we are and all the things we HAVE TO DO. In reality, taking a step back and saying, "I don't have to do this, I get to do this" is a life-altering statement. When so many of the students might say, "Mom, do I have to go to school?" A simple, and positive way to reply is..."You don't have to go to school, you get to go to school." This positive approach can be applied to so many different situations: chores, homework, practice, etc...
We all have gifts and character traits that make us special in specific areas, however; when asked to do something that isn't in our "want to", we have a tendency to immediately complain. So, when our "want to" doesn't match our "ought to", what should we do?
The students and staff discussed having a positive attitude and how we all should be more appreciative of all the things we GET TO DO!
Throughout this year, Jamison will be focusing upon this message, as well as others, with your children in a variety of ways, both in the classroom with individual teachers, as well as in school wide settings. One way we will do this school wide is through our Jamison Today Show... where we will feature video clips that are "value-centered" to celebrate being "other-centered" as opposed to "self-centered". Other values discussed this morning were honesty, including others, and doing the right thing.
I encourage you to discuss our opening assembly with your child and our new school motto! My hope is that this will be a special school year for you and your child!
Sincerely,
Mr. Croyle,
Principal
