Mill Creek Magic Messages

News and Updates from Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha 10/21/2022

Ms. Ruth's 4th Grade Visits the Mill Creek Cafe!

Each month, classes compete in the cafeteria to earn an invitation to the Mill Creek Cafe. Classes can earn points based on positive cafeteria behaviors that align with our Creekers' Code tenets, such as being respectful and polite, cleaning up at the end of lunch, helping others, and respectful transitions to/from the lunchroom. We have incredible students, so the competiton for a Mill Creek Cafe invite always seems to be a nailbiter! Well, September's winning class, who dined at our Mill Creek Cafe last Friday, was none other than Ms. Ruth's 4th Grade! Mill Creek Home and School volunteers organized a great spread - pizza, french fries, punch, and... the best part... ice cream sundaes! Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha were happily put to work serving this deserving class of students, who all seemed to enjoy the experience!

Special thanks to our HSA volunteers and cafeteria staff for making this such a special lunch for Ms. Ruth's students!

Who will get the invite to the Mill Creek Cafe next month? We shall see...

FROM MR. ORTMAN and MR. MURTHA

Dear Mill Creek Community,

A message directly from Mr. Murtha here... I would like to share that I have the honor of, once again, being asked to serve as Acting Principal over at Kutz Elementary School during the upcoming maternity leave of their Principal, Ms. Adleberger. Some of you may remember that I served in a similar capacity almost exactly 2 years ago when Ms. Adelberger took a leave to care for her firstborn. I understand the importance of supporting Kutz during Ms. Adelberger's absence, allowing her to focus on her family and newborn, along with continuing to support Mill Creek with nothing less than my best. As I did 2 years ago, I will spend some days at Kutz and some days at Mill Creek, traveling between the 2 schools on days when the need arises. I place high value on my role at Mill Creek and supporting this Community, which has me committed to serving both the Kutz and Mill Creek Communities with my full focus and care. My support for both schools, depending on timing, is slated to occur from early November through early February.

I very much appreciate your support and understanding as I work with 2 valuable communities. Please know that Mill Creek will continue to be a priority for me and that I will be here (even if not always on site!) to continue support this wonderful Community and its students!

Sincerely,

John C. Murtha

Assistant Principal

P.S. Wishing our community members who celebrate... a joyful Diwali!

Information about Halloween at Mill Creek...

Mill Creek's Halloween Celebrations will occur on the 1/2 day morning of Monday, October 31. Here is some important information involving those celebrations:

Our Halloween Parade will occur early in the school day; start time will be 9:30 a.m. The parade takes place in front of the main school entrance in the bus loading/parking area. A roped-off parade path will be set up. Spectators need to be on the outside of the parade path. The Halloween Parade is weather dependent. If inclement weather occurs on the 31st, we will hold classroom celebrations only.

Costumes worn for our Halloween celebrations should be school appropriate. The following should not be a part of a school Halloween costume:

  • Hockey sticks, baseball bats, or other items that could be harmful.
  • Costumes/objects with violent themes.
  • Weapons used as costume props.

Classroom celebrations will occur after the Halloween Parade. Food is permitted for these celebrations, but we would ask that, where possible, community food items be individually packaged (students may still bring in their individual, daily snack for personal consumption in school). Please communicate with your child's classroom teacher if you would prefer your child refrain from eating food items that are part of classroom celebrations.

We look forward fun and spooky day on the 31st!

Instructional Spotlight - Ms. Divens, 6th Grade

As a part of their current science unit, Ms. Divens' 6th Grade class has been learning about different types of volcanoes. During a recent visit, they were focused on composite volcanoes (a.k.a. stratovolcanoes), which form and become larger/higher following each eruption, as erupted debris cool and then build additional layers upon the existing surface. As a part of their learning, Ms. Divens provided her students will a demonstration of how composite volcanoes erupt, which provided them with a micro view of how an eruption would look, as well as how it would lead to a buildup of layers. The class conducted multiple demo eruptions to better visualize the latter point.

While one of nature's most dangerous forces, volcanoes can also be fascinating, and Ms. Divens' students certainly appeared to be fascinated by what they were learning. Who knows?... maybe Ms. Divens inspired a future volcanologist!

Student Laptop Expectations

Central Bucks Technology & Innovation Department is asking us to stress the importance of laptop case use for students (grades 3-6) when they transport their laptops and when laptops are not in use for extended periods of time. At school, we will be stressing the importance and reminding students of the need to put their laptop in its case during these times (e.g. when taking a laptop from their classroom to specials class). We ask that you stress these practices at home, too. Thank you for your support!

Additionally, if your child loses or misplaces their laptop case, please reach out to the Mill Creek Main Office.

District Laptop and iPad Care

Central Bucks Innovation and Technology Department has asked us to communicate the following regarding District-issued laptop and iPad care...

  • Please encourage your children to use their laptop/iPad bags for carrying devices in school, at home, and to and from each location.
  • Please encourage your children to report issues/problems with their devices, so they can be properly address and fixed as soon as possible.
  • The laptop/iPad payment fee covers accidental damage. Intentional damage may result in a family being billed for the damage.

Schools will be communicating these messages in school as well.

We appreciate your support!

Inclement Weather Procedures for Car Riders - Dismissal

We ask that, on inclement weather days, car riders post a placard with the student(s) family last name, so we can call in names for quicker dismissal. We will do our best to send a message out earlier in the day if we believe inclement weather dismissal is necessary for car riders. Feel free to use the placard template below if you find it helpful.
