Happenings for the Week
December 16, 2019
Week before break and what it means.......
Five days until break. Some teachers call this the longest week in the year. Kids are excited and anxious, even high school kids. However, children from impoverished areas like ours are sometimes a bit more nervous. There may not be a festive atmosphere at home. The holiday break may mean no breakfast or lunch for a week or more. We often see our students staying after this week. They are not looking to get extra work done, they are looking to avoid their home. Please keep this in mind as you deal with behaviors that may be out of the ordinary or maybe exasperated student reactions comparatively to other times of the year. Students are on edge this time of year. Cool heads and calming words will support and ease this tension.
Monday
I need to meet with the following students listed below after announcements on Monday morning to offer them the opportunity to participate in the Outstanding Vocational Student of The Year Award. Interested students from the list below will need to write an essay why they should be chosen. If they are also one of your students, please encourage them to participate in the competition. We typically only extend this to the top ten of the graduating class, but due to our exceptional 12th grade students we have decided to include the top 20 students.
Winners will attend a Statewide Ceremony at Mechanics Hall in Worcester in April along with their families and school representatives. This is a very prestigious award that many of our best and brightest have taken home.
Thank you,
Billy

Friday
Holiday Parties and Vacation
Shop parties will be held on Friday, December 20th, starting at approximately 11:06 a.m. As in the past, academic faculty have been assigned to a shop for additional supervision (list attached). Shop teachers will be responsible for food and beverages for their group. Teachers, please inform the students of the times and communicate the following information:
· The academic schedule for the day is periods 1, 2 and 3. Students may go directly to their shop (with their coats and backpacks) at 11:03 a.m. Students in academics may not attend sooner. Dismissal time to the buses will be at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided for students not wishing to attend the shop parties.
· Teachers are to make sure shops and classrooms are in good order and that all displays are taken down prior to the end of the school day. There will be no decorations left on the doors or any egress hallways. Any decorations, paper or plastic, need to comply with Harwich fire code.
· Students, based on convictions, who do not want to participate in the shop party, are to use the library for recreational reading and socializing.
· Students will not be allowed to attend shop parties other than their own. Please don’t give your students permission to leave the party intended for their own shop.
· There will be no cooking of any kind in the shops.
· Former students are not allowed to attend any of these parties.
