Greeting from the Athletic Training & Health Sciences Programs at Duquesne University!!
We hope that you have enjoyed a productive fall semester working with your students. It is hard to believe that our students are gearing up for final exams and looking ahead to the spring semester.
We recognize that this is also a busy time of year for you as you continue to guide and mentor many of your students through the college search and selection process. To assist students, we have already scheduled and will continue to add a number of opportunities in the weeks ahead for students to connect with faculty from our Athletic Training and Health Sciences Programs. In fact, we have School and Program-Specific visits available weekly. These meetings provide students with a chance to learn a bit about our programs while also getting answers to their questions. They can pick a date that best meets their availability here: https://apply.duq.edu/portal/ug_all_visits

Towson University Mentoring Program
I am sending this message on behalf of Aaron Saunders, Coordinator of Student Success Programs at Towson University. I would like to invite your ninth grade students to join our College Readiness Outreach Program virtual program. Students a part of C.R.O.P. receive a mentor, who will be there to help spark interest in college, be a sounding board and guide them through the process of deciding to go to college and helping them find out what their best fit is.
Ninth-grade students also attend a monthly workshop on zoom to engage and provide them and their families with information on various topics such as scholarships, student organizations, financial aid, resumes, cover letters and entrance essays. Students who join C.R.O.P. also get a leg-up on the admissions process, up-to-date information about FAFSA and interaction with higher education professionals a long with a campus visit during our annual CROP Day.
While the cohort starts in ninth grade, students maintain a mentor all the way through high school and if they decided to attend Towson have the option to stay in the SAGE Residential Community, where they will be among fellow former CROP Students and live with students of diverse backgrounds fostering community pride and support from the SAGE community. Once in SAGE they will receive a peer mentor to make the college transition smoother and hopefully the following year become a mentor themselves.
If you have potential students who you feel could benefit from the program or are interested, please have them complete the registration below.

CLASS OF 2024
Wednesday Dec 13 was the senior parent meeting
We discussed the May events (download below).
We asked parents to join and get active with PTSA so we can have a strong prom and after-prom.
Financial aid presentation is downloadable below. it is in powerpoint format because there are active links.
There were some parents who asked about submitting multiple deposits for multiple colleges, as a way of hedging one's bets. This is not recommended. Please wait until FAFSA is processed, and all aid offers are extended before deciding which ONE college to commit to and send in a deposit. You don't ask multiple people to go to prom with you. This is a much larger scale. Under the governance of the college admissions profession, you have until May 1 to send in a deposit. Everything else is high-pressure sales. And sending in deposits to multiple colleges is dishonest and unfair to everyone else who is getting relegated to a waitlist or deferment list because you didn't narrow your college search in 11th grade.
Planned timeline for FAFSA Completion @ PHS
Jan 8-12: Mr. Goldman will meet with English 12 classes to help seniors complete THEIR portion of the FAFSA. They will need to be able to use the FSA ID that we created in November if they hadn't already done this.
Jan 13 @ 10am-12pm: FAFSA Completion event for parents to come in and complete their FAFSA.
FAFSA will not open until "December" this year but we need to be prepared, since the Maryland deadline is not getting extended beyond March 1.
Update by the numbers
61 (out of 250) have reported admission to 4-year colleges (bring in your acceptance letter to get your name on the wall!)
83 have ordered their caps and gowns from https://www.jostens.com/apps/store/productDetail/1067117/PIKESVILLE-HIGH-SCHOOL/Cap-and-Gown/2098515200/CATALOG_REPOSITORY/Cap-Gown-Tassel/2164889984
185 have completed the commencement planning survey at https://forms.office.com/r/7s5FD24GnB
Message to parents about FAFSA
- To help pay for college (of any type), colleges and the state and federal government require the FAFSA to be completed. We are planning a financial aid night in December, because the FAFSA will not open until then. But to prepare to complete the FAFSA, we ask that every senior, as well as the parent who claimed them as a dependent on the 2022 taxes, along with a step-parent or co/biological parent who lives with them and may have filed taxes separately, all create an FSA ID at www.studentaid.gov. Each person (called a “contributor” in this process, even though that step-parent is not obligated to cosign any loans) who creates an FSA ID needs a social security number and their own email address. If one of those parents does not have a social security number, they will still need to complete the FAFSA with the student, but those steps will need to wait until the winter. The deadline for any Maryland state financial aid is March 1. Please aim to have your child’s FAFSA complete before January in case you need January and February to resolve any issues that arise.
- Some colleges require the CSS profile in addition to the FAFSA. CSS Profile deadlines are often in November if a student is applying early to the college. Read more about it at https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org/
- Questions about this process should be directed to Mr. Goldman at jgoldman@bcps.org. If you need an interpreter for this conversation, one can be arranged.
- The following was asked by the BCPS office of school counseling to be shared:

Drexel U Liberty Scholars
For over a decade, the Drexel Liberty Scholars program has helped to break down the barriers to higher education for Philadelphia-based students. Offering full-tuition and fees scholarships, program-specific Living Learning Communities, personalized faculty/staff mentors, and special programming dedicated to success, we are proud of all the Liberty Scholars who have shown what can be accomplished when barriers to access are removed. Now, we want to lift those barriers even further.
For the last three years, this initiative has been eligible to students across the U.S. and strengthened its impact by focusing on recruiting students who demonstrate a commitment to social justice.
Social justice has always been a core principle at Drexel. The Liberty Scholars program has already invested approximately $89 million in scholarship and support funding since 2010. Looking ahead, we are striving to strengthen our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice by cultivating the thought leaders and social justice advocates of tomorrow through the program's expanded eligibility criteria.
We hope that in sharing this news, you will encourage any students you think might be eligible to apply to the Liberty Scholars program for fall 2024. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we hope your advisees will consider continuing their education with us.
View more information about the Liberty Scholars program, its associated deadlines, and all the necessary requirements.
There are countless rewards to a Drexel degree, and we look forward to working with you!

The Torch Scholars Committee looks for bright, talented students who:
- Are first-generation college students whose parents/guardians do not have a U.S. undergraduate degree or equivalent.
- Are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or eligible for federal financial aid.
- Are from a low-income household, as determined by the FAFSA, and are likely to be Pell Grant eligible.
- Have persevered despite difficult family situations, cultural barriers, financial challenges, or unfavorable educational environments. These challenges have kept them from reaching their full academic potential and from applying for admission to a highly selective school such as Northeastern.
- Show leadership through community, school, work, or service. Torch nominees are “game changers” in their communities, working to make a difference.
- Have enrolled in college prep classes and would be successful with the additional academic and personal support provided by the Torch Scholars Program, but have not yet demonstrated academic success at the level of their true potential.
- Represent a diversity of academic majors, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and geographic areas.
In addition to academic and personalized support, the Torch Scholars Program covers all costs for tuition, room and board, and fees for eight semesters of undergraduate study. This also includes all expenses for a six-week Summer Immersion Program prior to the start of the first year in college.
Nominations are due by January 1, 2024. Students are considered based on their college application and must submit a Common Application or Coalition Application to Northeastern by the January 1, 2024 admissions application deadline.

Scholarship for JUNIORS
We are so pleased to have received a Coolidge Scholarship application from a student at your school in the past. We write to let you know that the 2023-24 Coolidge Scholarship application is now live. We hope you will share this opportunity with interested high school juniors at your school.
A quick refresher: the Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride, four-year, merit scholarship that recipients may use for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in the United States. Any high school junior who plans to enroll in college in the fall of 2025 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident is eligible to apply (current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Winners may use the scholarship to pursue any academic major.
Academic excellence is the primary criterion considered by the Coolidge Scholarship. Secondary criteria include an interest in public policy and an appreciation of the values President Coolidge championed. Successful candidates will also demonstrate humility and have a record of genuine service to their communities. A complete description of the scholarship’s criteria is available here.
The competition for the Coolidge Scholarship is significant -- only a few new Coolidge Scholarships are awarded each year from a pool of candidates that spans the entire country. Even so, students have reported to us in past years they were glad to have applied even if they didn’t win because the experience helped prepare them for college applications later on. Furthermore, the Coolidge Foundation invites one hundred of the top Coolidge Scholarship applicants to participate in the Coolidge Senators Program, which includes an all-expenses-paid summit gathering and a $1,000 scholarship. Scholarship applicants are automatically considered for the Senators Program.
Please know that the application requires that candidates read President Coolidge’s Autobiography and a few other reading assignments, and then write three essays. We therefore encourage students to begin the application early. Candidates who begin the application at the last minute are unlikely to be successful. The submission deadline is 5:00 PM Pacific time, Thursday, January 18, 2024.
