Ben Eielson Jr. Sr. High
Weekly Update January 5th, 2021
Happy New Year!
Eielson Families,
I hope the winter break allowed everyone the opportunity for some down time and each of you remain healthy and safe.
2nd Semester classes begin Wednesday January 6th. We are still operating in the condensed grading term, both Junior High and High School students will be taking 3 classes at a time. Junior High classes operate on a quarter system, the grading term is equivalent to 2 Quarters in the 9 week period (3rd Quarter Jan. 6th - March 5th). High School students will cover material of a Semester in a 9 week period, earning credits for successful completion of coursework. HS grading terms one semester Jan. 6th - March 5th; next semester March 15th - May 18th.
We will start this grading term January 6th in remote instruction, same fashion that we have done this year, via google meet or zoom class meetings. The School Board approved the option for families if they so choose for their student to return to the building for in-person learning on Feb. 1st. Changes to the daily bell schedule are classes will be held 5 days a week and to accommodate lunches when we return to in-person we have included a 'student support period' (SSP) to allow alternating lunches to accommodate social distancing of students.
If you haven't had the opportunity to fill out the Second Semester School Choice Survey the link is listed below. Just a reminder if you have more than one child attending Ben Eielson you will need to submit a separate form for each student. If you have questions please reach out!

Instructional Models
Starting in January, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District intends to provide more options for in-person learning, while still providing remote learning, eLearning, and BEST Homeschool choices for families. At the start of this school year, parents and students were presented with three options, a blend of In-Person and Remote Instruction, eLearning with a FNSBSD teacher, or homeschooling through the Fairbanks BEST Homeschool. Due to many factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the schools have operated in a remote learning environment for all of first semester, with only the most high need students having access in person instruction. Starting next semester, all students who wish, will have access to in person instruction at their school.
However, knowing that choice is important and that not all families will feel comfortable with their child(ren) returning to in person schooling during the pandemic, we will continue to offer instructional models that allow students to remain home.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this form. Please make sure to fill out a new form for each of your children.
