News from Dr. Wachel
Dear Madison Families,
At Madison, we are truly blessed to have an amazing team of teachers, paraeducators, and support staff who unify their talents, time, energy, and passion to serve students, families, and one another in our learning community. This year’s National Teacher Appreciation week arrived at the perfect time last week for the Madison team, and they truly loved every single moment of being showered with our community’s loving kindness.
Thanks to the amazing Madison PTA, our team enjoying creative lunches, treats, and special words of affirmation. Likewise, our school family showered our team with sweet notes, fragrant flowers, and delicious treats - we thank you! From gift cards to catered lunches, we were spoiled rotten with treats, decorations, and gifts! I heard so many exclamations of thanks from our staff; it made us feel very appreciated and loved. Thank you, too, to the many parents and kids who shared notes, emails or calls of appreciation with me and our staff. It’s a little thing to stop and say thank you, but please know it’s a BIG THING to our team. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to serve your family, and we thank you for making this week so very special for our team.
Free Summer Meals
The USD 231 Nutrition Services department is excited to announce that FREE summer meals will begin on Tuesday, June 1!
Although we will not have any on-site dining options available this summer, we are thrilled to be able to continue to offer FREE weekly curbside take-home meal kits on Tuesdays from June 1 – July 27 (no service on July 6). Kits are available to ALL kids ages 1-18 regardless of residence or income thanks to the USDA’s federally-funded Summer Food Service Program.
As you may know, our team has been hard at work this year to ensure that all of our community’s kids have had access to high-quality, healthy meals since our world was turned upside down in March 2020. This summer brings another chapter in that adventure as we roll out the best of everything we’ve learned from our pickup loop conversations and feedback from our families.
Here are the highlights of this summer’s meal offerings:
All kits will include entrees for 7 lunches and 7 breakfasts
Kits will also be packed with a weekly fresh produce bundle (featuring local farms!) and 2 half gallons of milk
Pre-ordering from our Nutrislice menu website is also available for an expanded selection of items including:
Ability to select your milk choices (here’s where you can select none!)
Vegetarian kit with meatless options for those who prefer this choice (quantities limited, pre-order required)
New THIRD option (the Fridge Filler!) that includes a weekly set of staples to help keep your budget on track (quantities limited, pre-order required)
Automatic registration for kid-less pickup (with no weekly email to show in line!)
Meals will be distributed from GEHS on Tuesdays from 12pm – 6pm. Tell your friends and neighbors that online ordering is open NOW! Never fear, if you don’t want to hassle with ordering online you can always show up with your kiddos and we’ll have the current week’s Greatest Hits (kit 1) waiting for you along with two half gallons of milk for each kiddo in your vehicle.
For more details, please visit our menu website at usd231.nutrislice.com and select the GEHS Curbside Summer Meals menu option and navigate to June 1. For assistance with ordering, check out the “Need Help?” button in the upper right corner (desktop) or under the bell icon (mobile) from our menu site. (For up-to-date info throughout the summer, follow us on Facebook!)

Note from Mrs. Daugherty
Hi Madison Family,
I wanted to share with all the Madison Bear Community that I will not be returning next year to Madison as the Occupational Therapist. I’ve decided to make a change and begin a new journey at a private OT pediatric clinic, Pediatric Connections, in Stanley. It was a tough decision to make, but the right time for me and my family. After being in the district for 8 years and involved in all grade levels of special education, being a "Bear" has always been my favorite. I will not only miss the students on my caseload, but all 'the bears' that I've gotten to know when visiting classrooms, during bus duty, and just chatting with in the hallway.
It's been a challenging year for everyone, and I applaud all of the families that had to make changes and step into the role of 'educator' for their kiddos during COVID. I wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Kelly Daugherty

Update from the Health Room
As we enter into Winter, it is a great time to remind our school community of the measures we take to keep students healthy and prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
We reinforce frequent hand washing with our students and coughing/sneezing into a tissue or their sleeve (not their hands).
In addition, we refer to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) recommendations when determining the need to send a student home from school. The JCDHE recommendation chart provides specific guidance on when a student can be readmitted to school.
For example, students are to be fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Occasionally we receive questions about head lice management in our schools, and we have an extensive set of resources on our website that can be found HERE.
As needed, we will inform parents when we see an increase in illnesses in our school population with the potential for rapid spread among students and staff (such as influenza) or in the rare instance we have a mandatory reportable disease occur in our population, like Mumps. General head lice notifications are not recommended as they have been found to cause harm and lead to unnecessary treatment. Instead, the school nurse will assess the need for notification on an individual basis to those considered close contacts.
Thank you for reinforcing healthy habits with our students. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our school nurse at (913) 856-0450.
