West Weekly Update
Volume 12, Issue 20, 1/23/22
From the desk of Mr. Jolliffe
Staff – This weekend has been quiet on the COVID front and we currently only have two uncovered positions for Monday. We had subs pick up eight positions for Monday (that is a miracle). Continue to be on your toes as the county COVID rate just keeps going up and our district continues to shut down schools. High school is a different beast as we are dealing with seat time of seniors. If we do have to close, it is my understanding that 9-11th will be like a snow day but teachers of seniors will conduct remote learning. Thus, it is important to have your senior classes prepped and ready for remote learning if needed. Like last week, we will need everyone on board and ready to cover classrooms and be instructionally flexible.
If you have symptoms and need tested please contact one of the secretaries and let them know (no name) you are headed down to the auditorium foyer to be tested. Administration will test you. Please, please, please make sure you have a week’s worth of lesson plans ready, as there is a chance you might have to miss some time. More than likely, staff will be covering your classes and you need to do our professional diligence with quality plans to follow.
Administration will be reaching out to families and students that have struggled with attendance. We certainly understand COVID illness but we also have students that are not attending and we need them here. If you do have students return from a prolonged absence please seek to understand their situation and provide necessary resources. We have significant numbers of kids at all grade levels that are non-attenders. We have to work to re-engage these students!
Parent-Teacher Conference on Feb. 9th and 15th from 4-7pm will be offered by phone, text, email, virtual and in-person if needed. The intent is to get in contact with your AT students and discuss essential educational items such as grades, credits, attendance and behavior. Thanks for putting in this work!
Mask up, wash your hands and social distance.

AVID Applications are OPEN
The AVID Site Team is hoping to increase our numbers for the current freshmen classes next year and we want your help identifying some students who might be a good fit! Check out the infographic (the dark purple section) to get a refresher on the usual target profile of an AVID student candidate.
9th grade AT teachers (especially) and any teachers/support staff around freshmen: Will you pretty please share this infographic with your students? It's the perfect time to have them consider the AVID elective as they reflect on the last semester and set goals for their futures... Especially if they are considering the college trajectory.
Application information is on the West High website. The last section of the infographic has a QR code with the direct link. The application closes on January 27.
Mr. Padilla and Mrs. Norris are the freshmen teachers and we (and the entire AVID site team) would be happy to chat to any potential AVID candidates about what to expect in the AVID elective.
If YOU are considering applying to TEACH the AVID elective and have questions, please reach out to Mrs. Ramsey, Mrs. Wallace, or Mrs. Norris.
Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions on our recruitment endeavors.
Counselors: Please consider saving this infographic for when you meet our incoming freshmen.
Thank you for your cooperation! We appreciate you!

Student Council Elections
This week will be campaigning where students can hang up signs and tell students to vote for them.
If students are still interested in running for office, have them come see Mrs. Hansel in M16. Students need to turn in an application before hanging posters.
Candidates will give a 1 minute speech to our journalism team and they will be featured in this week’s podcast. All Academy Teachers will need to share the podcast with their students or at least direct them to the Schools Website where they can find it on the left hand side with the picture for West Word. Please excuse the candidates when its their time to record during academy time. A schedule will be sent out for Tuesday & Thursday.
Monday, January 31st, teachers will give out the link for student voting during academy time. Students will only be able to vote for their own grade’s officers. It is very important that all Academy Teachers give students the link. Then it is the students choice if they vote or not. A QR code will also be sent with the link if that helps teachers and students to have access to voting.
Any questions, please email Melanie Hansel at mhansel@usd259.net
