Mont St Michel

Introduction

Mont St Michel in France was built in 708 ad. It looks like it's own village. The architect of it was William De Volpiano. Also the people that built it were Vikings.

Symbolism

The Mont St Michel symbolizes the pilgrims. The reason for that is because that the place they want to for religious freedom. The monastery was important place in medieval Christianity.

The first monastic establishment here dates back from the 8th century.

History

The Mont St Michel church abbey turned into a prison at one time. At the same time abbey was developing a village. That happened in the Middle Ages. The duke of Brittany accidentally set fire to the church. (linkparis.com)

Construction

The construction of Mont St Michel of the original abbey took more than five years to build, 1017-1521. The way to get the island is the land bridge. The sea can raise up to 45ft during high tide at Mont St Michel. (worldheritagesite.org)
