February 2018 Newsletter
English-
We have been singing away with our “Preposition Song”. They have really belted this one out!
Our research paper has begun. The students will be researching, writing and presenting on an author. There is a very detailed calendar in their packets that should have already been signed by you. Please be on the lookout for the packet and all the information for this project which is on Google Classroom. This project will count heavily on term 3! Please make sure your child stays with the calendar and any updates that go along with it. Due dates are below.
Math-
We have been working on angles the last few weeks while reviewing everything else we have learned this year. We were going to have the first test of the 3rd term before the vacation, but we ran out of time. We will have tests on:
A,B, & C Blocks
Wednesday March 7th(half day) and 9th
Thursday April 5th for A, B, & C blocks
E & F Blocks
Tuesday March 6th
Wednesday April 4th for E & F blocks
After angles, we’re going to be focusing on a little more Geometry and some probability.
Since I coach JV softball in the spring, my time after school will not be as open as it was earlier in the year. Mrs. Perrault will continue to be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during Powerblock. Keep checking Google classroom for the homework and the IXL assignments.
Social Studies
We finally finished Ancient Egypt and the students did very well! What a great unit! We just started Ancient Greece and it is already very exciting. We traveled to an in-class Greece Museum and studied many aspects of the civilization. We had the “Ms. Martin’s Olympics” Activity where we all competed as various Greek city-states, it was fun for all! We have been following and watching the Olympics in class, with the amazing technology we have at WB we are able to live stream it and enjoy all the games! Throughout the unit, we will be focusing on the geography, the culture, and history of Ancient Greece. This is a really exciting time in Social Studies Class! Keep checking Google Classroom for homework and class information.
Science-
What a great month we had studying ecology! We have discussed food chains and food webs, along with energy flow and the energy pyramid. We made our own food chains and traced the energy flow through an ecosystem. Next, we learned about symbiotic relationships: mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism, and created “symbiosis want ads” for one organism in a symbiotic relationship. We have moved on and are currently researching biomes, and reporting on climates and organisms that are common to each of the different biomes. From this point, we will move on to our study of populations within ecosystems, as well as begin to go over different types of cycles on Earth, including the Carbon, Oxygen and Nitrogen Cycles. Thank you to everyone who so graciously donated glue sticks to the Science Classroom! Also, please continue to check Google Classroom for additional assignments, announcements, and resources!
Reading-
Over the past few weeks, we have learned many facts about Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt. We read several sources, discussed higher order thinking questions, and even wrote a yelp! review on one of these impressive women. Additionally, we worked hard on figurative language. Students worked in cooperative writing groups and did a great job looking at song lyrics to find different examples. We took a quiz which is posted on Aspen.
Next up- We will continue to work on research projects focusing on extracting important information as well as proper editing techniques.
During the month of March, we will be learning about Jesse Owens. His life and accomplishments contribute to the theme of equality. We will look at a biography and connect to the Olympic games. What an amazing athlete and person he was! We will also read about Sylvia Mendez and learn how she contributed to the civil rights movement.
Continue to look at Google Classroom for updates.
