Congratulations LAF readers!!!
Read-a-thon results are in and LAF students read OVER 400,000 minutes during the month of March! The top classes were Coleman, Worden, and Marshall with over 22,0000 minutes per class! The nearly $14,000 in funds raised has allowed us to support the following:
- Helping Hands: LAF has donated $2,300 to Helping Hands which purchases and distributes grocery gift cards to students and families in Chatham in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. See flyer below.
- WIRES: LAF has donated $200 to support the wildlife victims of the Australia Wildfires. When the Read A Thon began many students expressed concerns about the Australian wildfires occurring earlier in the school year. WIRES mission is to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife and inspire others to do the same.
- Classrooms: Another portion of the monies will be used to support the LMC and classroom needs. As we head into the new school year, we will meet with the new PTO Board and LAF administration to assess our needs for reopening school or needs in the LMC or classroom libraries.
We hope you enjoyed Grump! Families who purchased other books from, Liesel Shurtliff can expect that copies will be delivered in June, and we will determine the safest way to distribute them. Author Day author Liesl Shurtliff has agreed to deliver a virtual presentation to the school in lieu of her in-person appearance that was scheduled for March. Stay tuned for the date of this virtual presentation.
BIG THANKS to our Read-a-thon team Jen Cifrodella, Jen McNally and Kara Sibilia for their help in orchestrating this school-wide favorite event!
A Message from Mrs. Kelly, School Nurse
The bi-annual scoliosis screening which begins in fifth grade was not performed on our students this year due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Scoliosis is defined as a condition of the spine in which the spine may curve from right or left. It is most commonly seen during the time of rapid growth and may progress if not treated. The purpose of this screening is to catch scoliosis in the early stages. This screening will not be performed by a school nurse again until 7th grade, therefore, it is recommended that you have your child’s pediatrician examine his/her spine at their next well-visit. Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Kelly with any questions or concerns sally.kelly@chatham-nj.org.
4th Grade School Supply Sale!!!
The time has come to start preparing for the 2020/2021 school year by ordering your supply kits for next year! The sale is active now and runs until July 1st. The sale supports our PTO, and saves you a trip to the store in August to find all the items the teachers would love your student to have!
The link to purchase the kits is www.1stdayschoolsupplies.com, then go to “start here”, type in the 07928 and hit GO. This will take you to a list of schools in Chatham, select LAFAYETTE AVENUE SCHOOL, and hit the Supply Kits button, and you are exactly where you need to be! The kits will be delivered to your child’s classroom by the first day of school next year…what could be easier than that! Thank you for your support and stay well.
Please contact Dawn Caputo-Davison if you have any questions (dawneliz30@gmail.com).
