The Aztec Background

Basic Information

• The Aztecs had no professional army that fought for them

•The Aztecs were located in Tenochtitlan, in Mexico City.

•The empire was founded and expanded around 1428.

•Schools- children that went to school were noble children. Girls and boys went to separate schools.

•Clothing- the women wore a skirts. The men wore loincloths and sleeveless poncho.


They built huge monuments that would take months even with today’s cranes

The Aztecs also were the first to worship only four gods!

The Aztecs had many beliefs. They believed the sun fought darkness every night and rose to save mankind. They believed the earth was flat. They believed that if they fed the sun blood, it would rise. They also believed in 13 heavens and 9 hells.

Sacrifice was one of the main events in the Aztec religion. Priests made human sacrifices to make the sun god happy.

Laws- if you cut down a living tree you would die, if you were to drunk 1st offense head shaved and house destroyed 2nd offense death

  • Their sport they played was Tlachtli which was a ball game between 2 teams using a rubber ball
  • Winning team chose one player on the opposite team to be sacrificed

Aztec Farming

Aztec farming has become most famous because of the brilliant chinampas system that aztec farmers use. Tenochtitlan built this on a swampy but rich filled ground, the chinampas became the key to the food production of the people.
