Here is what's on top at Buena Vista! 1/12/2022
Note from the Principal
Good Evening Buena Vista Parents,
I hope you all are doing well. The weather this week has been lovely for outdoor eating. Students and staff really enjoy being able to eat and play outside and it looks like our nice weather will hold for this week. That said, please continue to send your child in layers to school as our mornings are still quite chilly. More importantly, please label your child's warm clothing with their first initial and last name.
School Lunches
While we are talking about lunch, I would like to send a gentle reminder about sending healthy snacks, lunches, and drinks with your child to school. Our district's food policy supports healthy and nutritious eating and our free lunch program offers a well balance lunch for students. We do our best to encourage them to eat all of the offerings in their school lunch.
Many the home lunches you send are also nutritious and delicious (some of them artfully so). That said, I am noticing an increase in candy, sweets, and even occasionally soda coming to school. I ask that you discuss a healthy, balanced diet with your child and consider what you send to school each day and limit the sweets. We want them to have the best fuel for their learning and engagement while here. I don't want to be in the position of monitoring what students are eating if I do not need to --- I am not against a small treat included in a healthy lunch as a special finale to their lunch meal and I hope we can partnership on this.
For those of you who are interested, here is some information that I have gathered:
Making the Connection: Dietary Behaviors and Academic Grades (CDC-article)
Packing a Healthy Lunch (Harvard School of Public Health)
A final thought on this...I was a full-time working parent trying to get my own elementary children to school each day and on time with a healthy lunch and snack (and this is was when we were not in a pandemic). To be honest some days were hit or miss. I truly understand that we are all doing the best that we can so please don't forget the school district does offer a free lunch and breakfast to every student.
Health and Safety
I want to continue to thank everyone for notifying the school if your child is not feeling well or has been exposed to Covid. This allows us to continue to ensure our school community remains safe. I wanted to remind everyone about the following guidance:
- Wear masks that fit snugly over the mouth and nose as masks are required indoors at all times.
- Wearing masks outdoors is highly recommended during close contact play because of the new variant.
- Have your child dress warmly as we will be keeping doors and windows open in the classrooms and eating outside.
- Consider getting the vaccine if you have not done so already.
- Keep your child home if COVID-19 symptoms are present or they have tested positive for COVID-19 and contact the school office. If you have questions regarding exposure, please call and we will help you throughout the process.
- Reinforce hand washing throughout the day (we will also encourage this as well as sanitizing).
If you have questions or concerns regarding COVID, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. We are all in this together and we want to make sure we all stay healthy.
Please continue to be safe and take care.
Respectfully,
Angela Gramlick
Principal
