Principal's Message
October is Here!
Welcome to October and mid-way through the first trimester. This month promises to hold many fun, family events with the help of our PTO. Speaking of PTO and parent volunteers, moving forward, Edgewater will be able to fund fingerprinting for volunteers who plan on participating on a regular basis. We are so excited to open our doors to parents who want to support a positive school culture and climate.
October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. It is important that we teach our students the difference between being mean, being rude, and being a bully. Here are the definitions of each:
1. Rude is when a person inadvertently says or does something that hurts someone else.
2. Mean is when someone purposefully says or does something to hurt someone once or maybe twice.
3. Bullying is when someone has intentionally aggressive behavior, repeatedly, that involves an imbalance of power targeting an individual. The common situations are verbal, physical, relational (friends), or cyber. Remember, you can call me anytime to report incidents for investigation at (530) 990-0160.
In my nine years of being a principal, I have only met a few students who were being true bullies. Most of the time, students are simple being rude or mean. It is important that we ask students restorative questions to get to the seed of the problem.
One of the most common areas for older students to be mean, rude, or a bully to others is on social media. Chat groups, Snapchat, and TikTok are platforms where students can easily say things that aim to harm another because they cannot see the reaction of the person. It is so important for parents to pay attention to what their children are doing on the phone, especially if their door is closed. Take a look at their social media and pictures on their phone as often as you can. There are several applications that allow parents to monitor everything their child is doing on the phone. Bark (above logo) is one of the best apps a parent can secure their child's safety while on social media. Please help keep our young Sharks kind...even when we are not watching!
Thank you,
Renee Henderson

Perfect Attendance Awards
Edgewater will be awarding students with perfect attendance at our monthly Student of the Month Assemblies moving forward. We had so many students who will receive perfect attendance at our Oct. assembly. We want to thank all of our parents for getting our young Sharks to school every day! According to AttendanceWorks.com, "Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school."

STUDENT of THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBER:
Room K2 Art on the Office Wall
Lexia Super Stars
Climate Corner: Using data to improve student outcome.
From the data in September, the team discussed the two graphs shown below and came up with a precise problem statement: A few classrooms are experiencing high numbers of behavior with minor aggression and disruptions from a handful of students during instruction in the afternoons.
Then the team came up with solution actions (prevent, teach, reward, correct, extinguish and focus on safety): Target efforts on tier 2 supports for the students with 3 or more behavior referrals though CICO, parent meetings, using behavior charts, applying rewards, and providing counselor led peer groups.
The support team members to ensure the success of the out of class interventions are Mia Rodrigues (Wellness Aide), Raylene Robinson (counselor), Renee Henderson, and Terry Gamez (ORC).
Just a glimpse of our efforts to support and improve student outcome!
