Lessons to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Annually, Sioux City Community Schools are in session on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in order to facilitate specialized instruction that honors the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Working in partnership with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the District plans age-appropriate lessons for every grade. Parents/guardians are welcome to visit our classrooms on January 20 as we learn more about the significant contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. You can contact your child’s teacher or call the main office at your child’s school to inquire about lesson times. All visitors are asked to check into the building office and receive a visitor pass before joining the classroom.

PBIS News!
PBIS Parent News
At Irving, the focus of PBIS is to have clear rules and expectations for the behavior that we want to see in all areas of the school. We explicitly teach these behaviors and then reward students frequently with positive praise, HAWK cards, and celebrations for their great behavior. You can ask your student, “What are the rules in your school?” “How do you follow those rules?” “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?”
When students earn a HAWK card, they are earning it for our entire school family - themselves, the class, their grade level, and the whole school. Each HAWK card earned is added to our school banners. When they are full, we get to have fun celebrations! December celebrations will be cookie decorating and Polar Express Parties!
When everyone at school practices and understands what behavior should look like, there is more time for learning and we build a school community where everyone feels safe, loved, and important. We encourage you to talk to your child about PBIS. We also have a Facebook page that has all the exciting school PBIS news!

Winter Weather Information/Información del clima
Winter Weather Information
With cold weather upon us, it’s important to plan for inclement weather. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Suggested apparel includes a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves. If a student needs access to these cold weather apparel items, please contact the school office.
Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual. However, if a student does not have appropriate winter clothing, a school official may ask a student to remain inside.
When the atmosphere reaches a temperature that feels like 15 degrees or less, then all students are kept inside for recess/activities. The “feel” of the temperature is determined based on the National Weather Service’s report.
Thank you for helping us keep students safe and warm this season.

Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
