MRS. LEWIN'S ONE CALL NOW MESSAGE FOR YOU ....
Happy April Families - I hope this message finds you well.
As I am sure you are aware by now the Governor has extended our time out of school until May 1 and has clarified that our educational efforts (packets) will be counted in our school year - I know that sounds overwhelming but don't fret we have a plan! Over the last few weeks, we have worked hard to gain as much information and perceptive as to the struggles and successes of learning from home.
Next week from 10:30-12:30 on M, W, F we will be asking families to participate in a drive thru work swap where you will bring us your completed work and we will swap you for your next learning packet that includes explanations from teachers, notes and examples, schedules of online check-ins and opportunities for the arts! Over the next few days we will communicate more of the particulars but for now -finish work in packet 1 if you haven't already !! Any questions please email us at weainfo@leonagroup.com
Be safe and enjoy the SUN !
With gratitude,
Elizabeth Lewin M. Ed
School Leader

Environmental Science You Can Practice at Home
Landfill and Recycling Experiment Have you ever wondered what types of things decompose when they are sent to a landfill and what types of things don't? Our landfills are filling up fast and it is important to recycle whenever we can to avoid land pollution. On the first link below you will learn about land pollution and the second link will introduce you to an experiment to show you how fast things biodegrade when they are in the earth. Click here to learn more about land pollution Click here for landfill experiment from NASA SciFiles
Learning at Home
Educators will tell you that continuously practicing skills in math, writing, reading, and other subjects help students retain knowledge. Here are some resources you can access electronically.
Check out this Khan Academy link. It was provided specifically for school closures and makes a schedule for learning for each grade level: Click here to go to Khan Academy website This is a document from the National Parent Teacher Association that will allow you to assess what your child should be working on in each grade along with suggestions of what to do with them at home: Finally, learning should be fun! How about taking a tour of a world renown museum to broaden your child's horizons:

Learn more about our College & Career Ready program
Dave Conover of Northwest State University shows Horizon Science Academy 5th graders the way hydraulics work. Students at Whittier Elementary learn how to work as a team in a problem solving activity called "Crossing the Peanut Butter River." Adam Cassi of Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful speaks to a class of Rosary Cathedral students about recycling and careers. Rick Jimenez of IBEW Local #8 works with one of our Sunbridge Schools families. They are making a flashlight to understand how electricity works at the "It's Electric" Parent Engagement event. Field Trip Fun! Every year the College and Career Ready, Set, Go program takes students on field trips to work sites or colleges. Once students are enrolled in the program they are eligible to go on these field trips. During field trips, students get real-world experiences at places of work and in college and university departments. Students speak with managers, workers, faculty and staff to learn details about the work involved in specific jobs and what to study in school to be prepared for careers or college upon graduation. Classroom Learning Our classroom lessons are 45-60 minute sessions during the school day. We go into classrooms twice per month from October through May to deliver Ohio Standards-Aligned Lessons to get students high school and career-ready. Lessons focus on communication skills, goal setting, financial literacy, time management skills and much more. Career Mentors CCRSG connects students with career mentors. These volunteers come into our school-day sessions to share their career journey plus resources and information about how to be successful in well-paying, in-demand careers in our region. Some of the Career Mentors this year were Mike Smith of Promedica, Adam Cassi (see photo on left) from KT/LCB, and Terry Cosby from Taylor Automotive. Each speaker brought their unique message to the students Family Fun Festivals College and Career, Ready, Set, Go provides hands-on Parent Engagement event for our school partners. One of this year's themes is It's Electric and our hands on activities included static electricity, circuit boards, power sticks, creating a flashlight, and a making lighting with a Tesla coil. Our goal is to get families to learn about career opportunities together by engaging in real world, inquiry-rich activities with area experts and career educators. We had volunteers from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #8 (see photo on left) working with families on electricity projects.
