valentine's day candy
In keeping with the Framingham Public Schools wellness practices, Dunning School continues to be committed to safe and healthy school programs for all of our students. At this time we ask for your continued assistance in supporting our practice of providing students with fun, non-food celebrations.
Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity for students to let their friends know that they are thinking of them with a note or card. We do not allow students to bring in food treats to share with other children to ensure the safety and health of our students. Please do not send in Valentine's Day cards with candy attached.
Thank you for you help with this.

Language Games
Brett Berkman, Literacy Coach
As young children learn to read and/or learn to speak a new language, there are many games you can play that will help them hear and manipulate sounds in words. These types of games will help your children understand that each word has its own individual sounds and changing one sound can change the entire word! Phonemic awareness, or being able to discriminate and manipulate specific sounds, has been shown to be a predictor of how well children will learn to read.
Here are some games you can try at home:
Silly Sentences: Make up silly sentences with words which mostly start with the same letter. For example: Billie broke big blue blocks. Peyton played with a purple pumpkin.
Substitution: Use a specific letter at the beginning of each word in a sentence. For example, instead of saying, “Put on your coat.” say, “Tut ton tor toat.”
Manipulate words by changing sounds: I’m thinking of the word bat. Now change the /b/ sound to /h/. What word do you have now?
Rhyming: Orally list words that rhyme (cat, hat, mat, pat, rat,etc.). See how many you and your child can list.
Rhyming Books: Read rhyming books with your child (Dr. Seuss). Point out the rhymes to your child and/or see he/she can guess the rhyming word.
These are great games that are fun and beneficial. If you try some of them, make a video of you and your child playing with language and send it to me at bberkman@framingham.k12.ma.us. If you would like to read more about phonological and phonemic awareness, check out this article.
Family Winter Warm up night Games
Lauren Walton, Mathematics Coach
As part of our Family Winter Warm up night on January 16th, we invited families to join the fun by playing math games with their children. Many of the games were ones that children play frequently in their classrooms, and others were new ones to learn. The room was packed! It was heartwarming to see everyone so engaged and having such a wonderful time playing with numbers with friends and family.
Games are a great way to help math become more social, engaging, and really come alive. By playing games together you are opening the door to hear your child’s thinking, talk about strategies, and problem solve together, no matter what their age. Even if you have a love/hate (or maybe more hate-based) relationship with math, there are many games that inspire mathematical thinking in a comfortable way.
Many classic games help to support math learning, such as: Monopoly, Yahtzee, Phase 10, Sequence, and Rummikub. In the upcoming weeks I’ll offer suggestions on family night games that inspire mathematical thinking, how to enhance other games in your collection to do the same, and other easy-to-make games to play at home. I will also include question prompts that can help get the conversation started.
In case you missed the Winter Warm Up here’s the packet that went home, and remember, although there are suggested grade levels and skills to practice, anything can be adapted to fit your needs. Please reach out if you’re looking for a board game to match one of these games, lwalton33@framingham.k12.ma.us.

care and share
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
