Library News by Mrs. Browning, Librarian
Our spring book fair is February 28-March 7. The book fair will be open during Open House on March 5. Look for the flyer to come home soon. Also, look for the letter asking for volunteers. Your help is vital to a successful fair.
Keep sending those Boxtops for Education! Please check the expiration dates, as many have a March 2019 or summer 2019 expiration date, and will need to be sent in with the next group I mail near the end of February. We are still collecting the labels through the end of the school year.
Thanks to all of those who participated in the Schlitterbahn Waves of Pages reading program. Students who completed the 10 hours or reading will receive an award and a free admission to our Schlitterbahn water park at the end of the year.

Counselor's Corner by Mrs. Villarreal
What an awesome time we have been having discussing Character Education during classroom guidance lessons. So far, we have discussed RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, and KINDNESS. For the 4th six weeks, we will begin to discuss the character trait of INITIATIVE.
INITIATIVE means recognizing and doing what needs to be done before being asked. In other words, thinking and taking action on your own. This can be taught if we model it for our children and then let them try things on their own. Initiative is so important for school success. Students who take initiative to start their homework and projects when they are assigned will do better than those that procrastinate. This semester, we will continue with the Anchored 4 Life Club. This is a great program that will help new students transition to our campus, help build resiliency skills, help students learn to make friends, and it is all lead by student Team Leaders! Also, If you are interested in having your child test for GT in April, please contact me by email or at 361-694-9593. I will place their name on a list and send permission slips home in March. Parents, if you send in ADHD paperwork for teachers to complete, please provide them with the doctor’s name and fax number. After these forms are completed, they MUST be faxed to the doctor, per district protocol.
Things to discuss at home with your child:
*Discuss ways to improve study skills (staying organized, writing down assignments in agenda, etc)
*Ask your child if he/she is turning in homework and assignments. Ask to see his/her agenda and PBS folder.
*Discuss what it means to be independent (starting homework, chores without being asked).
CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS by Mrs. Hoover
In this Curriculum Corner I want to focus on writing in the classroom and writing for assessment purposes. The writing process consists of these six components:
Prewriting – rehearsal or brainstorming – help students to find the purposes and audiences
Writing the rough draft – concentrate on getting a “chunk” down on paper
Revising – writer’s craft (how to make it sound better)
Editing – proofreading/writing mechanics
Publishing – informal & formal
Conferencing -with teachers & peers throughout the writing cycle to improve writing piece
Students are expected to follow the writing process while writing on an assigned topic, to an assigned audience, for a predetermined purpose and for a defined period of time (four hours). Here are some strategies to consider when going through the writing process.
Focus on one aspect of writing at a time (rough drafts, revising, editing, etc.)
Offer lots of time to practice the various parts of the writing process
Use a chart or graph organize thoughts before writing
Encourage a variety of writing activities (writers journal, pen pals, write about past experiences, etc.)
Set a time every day for students to write about a topic of their choice and/or a writing prompt
Encourage and provide feedback about the writing piece (discuss with the student what was done well and what could be improved)
Nurse's Corner by Nurse Cheryl
February is American Heart Month! Encourage your student to lead a heart healthy lifestyle to include a variety of heart happy exercises and eating a heart healthy diet. Any activity that gets their heart pumping; like skateboarding, dancing, and basketball, should be done for at least 1 hour every day. The number one way to get your kids on the right track to a healthy diet is to lead by example. Enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors, from apples to zucchini. Focus on lean meats, like skinless chicken and fish. Choose grab-and-go snacks that are low or sugar free, like low/unsalted nuts and whole grain pretzels. Remember that eating meals as a family and having your child help you choose and prepare meals will help to build healthy food choices FOR LIFE.
