Balboa's Year of Claim

The year of Balboa's exploration was 1513. That was the year that Balboa found and claimed the Pacific Ocean for Spain. Actually, Francisco Pizarro, a famous Spanish explorer (who actually betrayed Balboa), was joined with him on this expedition.

Reasons for Exploration

Balboa's reason for exploration was because he wanted to explore and join a Spanish expedition. The expedition was planning on going to South America.

Birth Country

Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born and raised in Jerez de los Caballeros, 1475. Balboa's parents weren't the richest, so when he was just another young man named Vasco, he worked in the house of very wealthy noblemen. Noblemen lived on the Atlantic Coast of Southwest in Spain.

Wonderful Landmarks

The wonderful landmarks, or places that Balboa visited were the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and Hispaniola. He joined a Spanish expedition and unfortunately failed to settle in Columbia so they sailed right through the Caribbean Sea. He claimed the Pacific Ocean when by sailing through 45 miles of Panama's jungle. He landed in the island of Hispaniola when heh ran out of men, food, and even supplies.

Spain's Sea

A lot of people say," Although he did not find precious metals, he claimed the Pacific Ocean and all the shores for Spain." Balboa claimed the whole Pacific Ocean "hand in sword" style. (picture above) Balboa also claimed all the shores for Spain! We all are surprised about the return and part of the shock is because he did not bring back precious metals. But in general I think we all agree on something: Balboa's journey was so unpredictably awesome!

Desperate Escape

Vasco Nunez de Balboa joined a spanish expedition for the first time. They claimed they were heading out to the northern coast of Columbia. On the voyage, they didn't have enough men or food or even supplies to land in Columbia. So they continued sailing through the Caribbean sea. But then he very badly wanted to leave Hispaniola. Balboa wanted desperately to get out of HIspaniola and explore. So Balboa hid in a barrel which was being loaded onto the sip as supplies. The captain then found him and threatened to throw him off the ship. Then Balboa explained how he quickly came up with an idea to convince him that he knew the route very well. The captain fell for it and thought he would be very useful. Vasco Nunez de Balboa was saved!

The Patrons/Sponsors

The sponsors for Balboa's voyage to South America was the country of Spain. The whole reason Balboa set out to sea was because he joined the expedition. The men on the expedition were also his sponsors because they supported Balboa's trip.
