Welcome, Mrs. Hill!

We are SO excited to let you know that Valerie Hill will be our 1C teacher! She comes to us from Missouri, and has 13 years of first grade teaching experience. We are thrilled to have been able to hire her as one of our first grade teammates, and we know you're going to love her! We hope you'll all be at curriculum night next week to help us give her a big Texas welcome!

Weekly Happenings

We have had a fun week full of new things! This week In reading and language arts, we began our "King and Queen of the Day" routine in which we focus on getting to know a different child each day. We use the letters in their name to make words, interview them, and then write a story about them. We make all of our stories about a child into a class book that the King/Queen gets to take home. In a few weeks we will have crowned each first grader as royalty! We've also worked on the -at and -ap families, and practiced the sight words my, you, with, had, and can. In math we worked on number recognition to 120, counting to 120, and began talking about how to recognize "quick images," or groupings of items by counting quickly. In social studies, we discussed the need for rules and leaders in a community and developed a list of shared class expectations. In science, we began talking about the needs of living things, and will continue into next week as we talk about plants.

Lunch Buddies Wanted!

We're in need of an extra set of hands during first grade lunch. With three class sections this year (rather than our previous four), we'd love a little adult help! If you do volunteer for lunch buddy, we do ask that you help all first grade children, not just your child or your child's section. Thank you!!!

Happy Friday!

Each Friday, your child's class will be calling a mystery child's home phone number to wish that family a "Happy Friday!" We need to know what number you want us to use for that. Please indicate that HERE. Expect a phone call once per semester, as we'll call one child's family per week. If you receive a phone call from the school on a Friday morning between 8:00-8:30, you might want to let a voicemail pick up. Your child will enjoy getting to come home and hear his/her class on the recording! We don't tell the children who got the mystery call, we just wait until the following Monday morning to see who comes in having heard a fun message!
