Balfour on Campus Today!
Balfour representatives will be on campus at Hazel Green High School in the cafeteria during lunch today. They will be here to take up payments for seniors caps and gowns, and place class ring orders. Seniors, Balfour can still order announcements and supplies.
Calhoun Scholarship Deadline
The Calhoun Scholarship Office would like to remind you that their scholarship application deadline is MARCH 1st. Please remind your students to fill out their FAFSA and submit a scholarship application.
Current Announcements
HGHS has a new phone number! Madison County Schools recently partnered with Adtran to switch all phone systems over to Voice over IP, placing and receiving phone calls through the Internet rather than the traditional telephone network. The change will save the school system thousands of dollars every year. As a result, our main phone number has changed to 256-851-3220 and our fax is now 256-851-3221.
The Trojan Miss Pageants will take place on February 15. Little/Junior Miss - 10:00am, Trojan Miss - 7:00pm. Visit the Trojan Miss website for the latest pageant information, including registration and payment links.
Yearbook Day is coming soon! Make sure you are there by purchasing a school yearbook at www.balfour.com. The last day to order yearbooks online is this Friday, January 17. No extra yearbooks will be ordered so get yours today before it is too late!
Congratulations to the 2014 Diamond Dolls! Thank you to all of the applicants. With nearly 70 applications, this year was a new high for this organization. Diamond Dolls should stop by Mrs. Aguirre-Cantrell’s room for more information. There will be a short meeting after school on Friday, January 17. Spirit pack orders will be due at this time.
Central School is hosting a prom dress sale/swap on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 3:30pm. Bring any prom dresses that you would like to sell, loan, or give away. HGHS Speed and Agility School - Every Tuesday & Thursday night from 5:30pm-6:30pm at the Hazel Green Football Complex. To improve the speed, quickness, and agility; increase vertical jump and explosiveness; help develop a relentless work ethic, to teach proper running form and overall athleticism of all athletes entering the Trojan Nation. Open to all male athletes who are currently in 6th-7th grade. Beginning Tuesday, January 7 - April 17. Cost is Free!
Rec volleyball registration starts this weekend at Hazel Green Ball Park! There will be teams for ages 9-16. The cost is $65.00 and includes shirt, trophy and year-end banquet. Come out and support the MVMS Baseball Team Saturday, January 18th at Meridianville Middle School for the Annual Ugly Walk! Taco salad dinner and silent auction begin at 4:30pm and the Ugly Walk starts at 6:00pm. $5 for admission and $5 for dinner.

Special Programs
The 2014 Honor’s Convocation sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Huntsville Chapter) will hosts its annual event to honor students across Madison County who have made the A or A/B Honor Roll during 1st semester. Any student interested can pick up an application in the Guidance Office and return to Mr. Heard by February 7, 2014.
US Naval Academy Summer Programs - Summer STEM program is designed for rising 8th-11th graders who are interested in pursuing education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. The Summer Seminar program, designed for rising 12th graders, gives students the opportunity to find out if they have what it takes to be a midshipmen. National School Counseling Week Art & Essay Contest
Eligibility & General Guidelines:
· Participants should be students in grades K – 12.
· Artwork should be submitted for grades K – 5. Artwork should describe how your counselor has had an impact on you.
· Essays should be submitted for grades 6 – 12. Essays should not exceed 1 page, providing detailed information on the impact your school counselor has had on you.
· ALL artwork and essays must be submitted with a National School Counseling Week Art and Essay Contest Entry Form (located on the back of this form).
· Prizes for each category (K – 2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12): The 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners from each district should be submitted to Shelly Johnson by the district coordinator or school counselor supervisor.

Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week – Recognition for students who not only excel as athletes but also excel in the classroom and in the community. Applicants must be seniors with at least a 3.5 GPA and include a photo with the application. Athlete of the Year will be chosen from the Athletes of the Week to receive a $1000 scholarship. Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend - Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.
1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.
2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.
3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.
Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors students on April 23 during school. All students are strongly encouraged to utilize this service provided to us. For more information, visit http://www.actstudent.org/onlineprep/.
First Priority/FCS meets every Tuesday morning at 7: 20 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.
Parenting Assistance Line: PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.
Recycle: Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.
Reward Cards: Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit: Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
Loyalty Reward Tags: (Hazel Green Pharmacy Loyalty Key Tag Program) Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your loyalty key tag when you visit Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you purchase a Prescription/Gift/OTC have them swipe your tag. HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a loyalty key tag. Just stop by the main office to pick one up.
