Whatever it Takes. Every Student. Every Day.
This week at HES students have began establishing instruction routines with their classroom teachers. Our goal at HES this year is to streamline our instruction so that we're all on the same learning path at a similar time. For example, this week grades 3-6 were all instructing on the reading comprehension skill (inferring) at the same time. I also walked through classes during math instruction and I was able to notice 5th and 6th grade classes mirroring one another in the instruction that was being provided. When we're all instructing in this way, this provides equity for all students, parents can expect a baseline of instruction regardless of the teacher who is in the classroom. By establishing this type of instruction, this assists with having us all on the exact same page. If you were unable to join us for back to school night, the link has been provided for you below so that you may go through that presentation at your own convenience.
Go Hornets,
Mr. Pennington
We're looking for help in the following areas: volunteers, childcare assistance, substitute teachers, custodial help, and a Title I paraprofessional. If you know anyone in the community who can help fill these positions, even part-time, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact the front office with any questions at 812-294-4806

Important Back to School Night Information
Several important pieces of information were included in last night's presentation. It's important for parents to be aware of the BHSC elementary behavior policy that is included in the student handbook, our car rider policy, and our attendance policy. For car riders, please remain in your cars before and after school - this adds 30 seconds or longer to our procedure and this can quickly cause the line to back up. For our attendance policy, families will receive a notification letter after 5, 10, 15, and 20 absences. 20 absences requires HES to file a DCS/CPS report, and contact the Clark County truancy officer to open a file with the Clark County court system. This is not a policy specific to BHSC, but is a state law that all schools in Indiana must follow. Parents are allowed to call in 2 excused absences without a doctors note or otherwise for each academic semester.
Beginning of Year i-Ready Diagnostic
Within the next month, all HES students will complete the i-Ready beginning of the year diagnostic test. This test will identify the present learning proficiencies of each student. Teachers will use this information to better meet students needs and communicate student proficiency levels to parents throughout the year.
All Pro Dad
All Pro Dad is a great resource for parents that I subscribe to. It gives daily resources for communicating with children, parenting quick tips, and other resources that are valuable for our day-to-day. There is a school-based part of this community that we are actively pursuing to have as a part of community involvement at HES.
Field Trips Return!
Field trips will return for all students at HES for the 2022-23 academic school year. Per BHSC policy, students will go on two field trips per year. Field trips require student fees that cover the cost of attendance to a location (should their be one) and to cover the cost of transportation. Field trips will be communicated by classroom teachers of each grade level as the year progresses.

Social Media
Please be on the lookout for our expanded social media offerings for HES. This will include: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and this newsletter platform (Smore). Social media behavior for all members of the community is expected to be professional, positive, and appropriate. Inappropriate behavior as deemed by the administration of HES can result in the removal of a community member from the school social media pages, and the removal of the comment section of our social media pages should we feel required to do so.
Jump Rope for Heart will be returning to HES in February of 2023. Thanks Mrs. O!
