Public Health Faculty
Notes from Your UC Merced Library Liaison
Welcome to Fall 2018
Now that the fall semester is half-way through, I'd like to take some time to introduce myself. My name is Lindsay Davis, Instruction and Outreach Librarian. Previously, I was the UC Merced Library's Social Sciences liaison, which included Public Health, but I am now specifically the Public Health liaison. I look forward to working with you and your students.
For brand-new faculty members, I will also be sending a separate message about library services and one-time collection funds.
As your liaison, I can help answer questions related to library services and keep you up to date with events, tools, and resources that can help with your research and teaching needs. I will occasionally send and forward email messages. You can also reach me by emailing ldavis23@ucmerced.edu or calling 209.285.7742.
This news update highlights Open Access Week events, the Faculty Networking Hour in the Library, a call for embedding information literacy into courses, and workshops related to improving your data management and data research skills.
Open Access Week
Open Access (OA) is a growing international movement that uses the internet to throw open the locked doors that once hid knowledge.
OA literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. What makes it possible is the internet and the consent of the author or copyright-holder. OA is entirely compatible with peer review, and all the major OA initiatives for scientific and scholarly literature insist on its importance.
OA literature is not free to produce, even if it is less expensive to produce than conventionally published literature. The question is not whether scholarly literature can be made costless but whether there are better ways to pay the bills than by charging readers and creating access barriers. Business models for paying the bills depend on how OA is delivered.
Learn more about Open Access this coming week by attending any of the Library's Open Access Week events or stopping by the Library table outside of the Lantern on Tuesday, October 23 between 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Embedding Information Literacy
In the Library, I work in the Research and Learning Services unit, which is largely focused on helping undergraduate students transition to college-level research. My core responsibilities involve developing digital learning materials and working with instructors to embed information literacy into courses, as well as designing lesson plans and teaching research skills as a guest instructor.
I'd like to work more closely with the Public Health department on curriculum mapping and assignment design to further integrate information literacy into curriculum. I am also looking to work with individual instructors whose students would benefit from a more scaffolded approach to finding, using, and evaluating information. As the student population continues to grow and the library instruction team remains steady with four librarians, this would help to create a more sustainable research instruction capacity.
Creating Effective Data Management Plans Workshop
Preparing a data management plan is not only a requirement for many funding agencies but also encourages successful handling of collected data across a project’s lifecycle and beyond. This workshop will explore strategies on creating effective and successful plans.
