STEM Field Trip to Northeastern
MIT Data Activism
Please read about this opportunity from Calculus Project founder Dr. Adrian Mims, for students in all TCP Consortium schools who identify as Black/ African American.
The Calculus Project is partnering with Raechel Walker and the Personal Robots Group in the MIT Media Lab to present our scholars with an opportunity to participate in a project-based learning opportunity.
The Data Activism program aims to teach high school students to use computer programming and data science to challenge power inequalities, such as racism. Additionally, the high school students will collaborate with community organizations on their projects that require data analysis. Community partners and students will be part of every aspect of the research project, such as conducting background research about a specific example of systemic racism, finding a data set, and implementing a data analysis.
Students will be taught from February 4th through April 8th on Saturdays in the MIT Media
Lab from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Also, there will be 9 hybrid classes during the
week based on the student’s availability for 1 ½ hours. Based on the student’s schedule, they
can join the hybrid class in-person or virtually. Overall, the project will introduce students to
critical thinking and teach them the computer programming skills required to challenge social
injustice. All students will be compensated for their participation at a rate of $10 per hour in
the form of a Visa gift card. If you're interested in learning about the summer data activism
class that was taught in 2022, please read this MIT News article here.
There will be a virtual info session on February 1st at 6:00 p.m. Please follow this link to
register by Tuesday, January 31st and learn more about this amazing opportunity. If you cannot attend the information session, but want your child to participate, please email
amims@thecalculusproject.org before February 1st .
Tutoring Center
As a reminder, the Tutoring Center meets on Mondays in 119 with Mrs. Guarino and Tuesdays in 115 with Dr. Conaty.
We hope to see more students there!
