Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!
Dear SBMS Bear Families,
Recognizing our current context, I know there are a lot of unknowns and one of them has been school. Many thanks to our SBISD Superintendent, Dr. Jennifer Blaine, our Senior Staff and Board of Trustees for their work on the LearnSBISD plan and for their countless hours of conversation and planning around the start of school. We are eager and ready to get going for our start of the '20-21 school year on August 24th, recognizing that while we may have challenges before us, our SBMS Bears, both young and old, will rise to the occasion. The Amended SBISD Calendar can be found here.
This newsletter contains some helpful information on preliminary school information. More content will be sent towards the end of next week. Thank you to all families, particularly those new to SBMS, for your patience as we waited for the annual "Skyward Roll-Over" to occur that enables us to reach out to new families to introduce ourselves and share our new school year information. Now that this has occurred, we welcome you to SBMS!
My name is Stefanie Spencer and I am your campus principal. Entering my twenty-fourth year in education and my fourteenth (or fifteenth, I've lost track) year as a campus principal, I am looking forward to getting this year underway, building relationships with new staff, students and families and continuing those that have already been developed. Next week, our newsletter will be more comprehensive, but until then, this will get you started!
Be Well,
Stefanie Spencer

Yearbook Pick-Up
All students who pre-ordered yearbooks may pick theirs up on Monday, August 10th and Tuesday, August 11th according to the Bear Camp Schedule. If your child is a 9th Grader, you may select Friday, August 14th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you wish to purchase one, you may do so as long as supplies last. Pick up and sales will occur at the Band Circle.
We are hoping to include the yearbook purchase in our MySchoolBucks for last year's yearbook. More to come next week on details.
Chromebook Deployment Forms- New and Returning Students
As you may or may not be aware, SBMS is a 1:1 school, meaning that each of our students receive chromebooks for home use. Regardless of whether or not your child's learning model selection is virtual or in-person, they will utilize our Learning Management System (LMS) called ItsLearning to receive their assignments, tools and resources. They may submit assignments and common formative assessments and take part in discussion boards with classmates and their teacher regarding the content they are studying. These chromebooks may be taken to and from school to help with their studies.
Each year, students' families must complete the Chromebook Deployment forms now located on Skyward and, if selecting the insurance offered by the district (recommended), submit payment for that insurance program through MySchoolBucks (more information below). MySchoolBucks should be ready at the end of next week, you can take care of the forms now.
Directions for Family Access can be located here. If you do not know your student's password, you may contact SBMS at 713-251-4400 to secure it. This is the same process you used for your learning model selection. You may have likely also completed the forms.
Unable to find the forms on Skyward Family Access? You may access them here and bring them with you to Bear Camp at your assigned day and time.
SBMS Bear Camp: Virtual Edition
We are so excited to meet our new students and see returning students at SBMS Bear Camp slated for August 10th-14th. Traditionally, we have a camp where students come and pick up materials, receive a tour, and hear from administrators and counselors about the start of the year. This year, our camp will only involve packet and materials pick-up, but these packets will also contain links to a staff introduction, tech directions and resources and fun opportunities to take place the week of August 17th-21st. All students and families can stay in their cars and pick up their items. Please wear your masks and if you must get out to complete paperwork, please use appropriate social distancing measures.
6th Graders and New to SBMS 7th and 8th Graders: Using the map above, parents and students will be guided to travel to various stops around the perimeter of SBMS to pick up the following
- Station #1: Check-In and Confirm Receipt of Chromebook Forms (Skyward) and Insurance Payment (MySchoolBucks) or paper copies. Location (by our competition Championship Gym entrance)
- Station #2: Chrome Book, Charger and Packet Pick-Up (Planner, How to Directions, Staff Roster and Pictures, and Invitations to fun events for August 17th-21) (Parent Circle)
- Station #3: 6th Graders and NEW to SBMS/SBISD Student Tech Check: Families will park and students will log on to their device so someone can support you if you encounter difficulty. (Parking Spaces in front of Cafeteria entrance)
- Station #4: Textbook Pick-Up: Most of our textbooks are online, but if you wish to have a hard copy or need a consumable one, you will pick one up in front of the school. (Parking directly in Front of School)
Returning 7th/8th Graders: You may come to Bear Camp to pick up the packet of materials you need, but also to pick up textbooks, a yearbook (if you ordered one) and get assistance for chromebook repairs. Here is your process:
- Station #1: Check-In and Confirm Receipt of Chromebook Forms (Skyward) and Insurance Payment (MySchoolBucks) or paper copies. Location (Championship Gym Entrance)

MySchoolBucks- Download the App to Make Back to School Fees Simple at SBMS!
Exciting News! SBMS will be using MySchoolBucks this year!
Spring Branch Middle School will be using MySchoolBucks (MSB), a convenient online payment solution, in the 2020/2021 school year to streamline processes and make providing resources for resources easier for individual families. Parents can submit fees for athletics, choir, band, chromebook insurance and other fees that are collected throughout the year through this tool. This same tool is being utilized at many of our campuses, including Memorial High School.
We have not yet added all of the items that you will be able to purchase this year including the Optional Technology Coverage (for chromebooks), but downloading the app and adding your students can be done without that being in place quite yet. Next week, I will let all families know what they are able to purchase using the app and that we are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions: FAQs
In case these are helpful, these are answers to our most frequently asked questions:
1. What supplies does my child need to have in preparation for this school year? You may find our school supply list here. Teachers may require one or two more items that are specific to their content, but they will share this with students during the first week and extend grace until those items can be secured. If you are starting virtually, a few notebooks, pens and pencils will suffice generally, but you will need to review the math and science supplies to be sure you have what you need (particularly the calculator).
2. Are middle school students allowed to have cell phones or personal technology? Yes, but in limited circumstances. They may not use these devices (cell phones, air pods, etc) during instructional time. They use them during passing periods (one air pod only so they can hear directions if they need to be given) and during the first ten minutes of lunch (so they enjoy socializing with their peers). They may utilize them before or after school and if the teacher asks them to use them for instructional purposes. Cell phones are prohibited in locker rooms. Traditionally, we have the students stow their devices in a caddy so teachers are able to monitor device usage, but in light of COVID-19, we will ask students to stow devices in their backpacks. Students who do not honor this policy may have their cell phone picked up and a parent will need to retrieve it after 3:55 p.m. for the first incidence with additional disciplinary consequences occurring thereafter.
3. Do SBMS students use lockers? No, students at SBMS do not use lockers. While this is the advice all schools received in light of COVID-19 for this year, we did not use them last year. Please ask your child to regularly clean out his or her backpack so he or she is only carrying what they need to carry.
4. May students have lunched delivered to SBMS? No, they may not in light of COVID-19 as we are not allowed outside visitors to campus. Students will need to bring their lunch or purchase one from the Cafeteria each day. Please plan your back to school preparations accordingly- involve your student in this routine.
