International Peace Day

Dr. Maria Montessori spent much of her time developing peace education within her method. She was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize. Peace is deeply rooted in her approach as every Montessori classroom offers a peace corner to support constructive conflict resolution and some form of Peace Education. Through Peace Education, students develop inner peace which gives them the foundation for supporting peace in all aspects of life. In the Montessori classrooms, every individual has the opportunity to celebrate their differences in a space that encourages and accepts each difference as we are all unique.

“Peace is a goal that can only be attained through common accord, and the means to achieve this unity for peace are twofold: first, an immediate effort to resolve conflicts without recourse to violent -- in other words, to prevent war -- and second, a long-term effort to establish a lasting peace among men.” (Education and Peace, Montessori, 1949, p.27)

On International Peace Day, this Friday, September 21st, this song travels around the world, traveling from country to country. New Zealand schools start it off. To learn more about this, please visit www.singpeacearoundtheworld.com.

Thank you!

Thank you for visiting on Back to School Night. We appreciate families taking the time and effort to engage with us. It was exciting sharing the vision and purpose of the curriculum with you all. The newly revised Student Conduct and Discipline Plan discussed by the administrators will be released soon. Thank you for your attention as we discussed that Title I funds are provided to our school to support those students at risk of not meeting standards and the fact that MMA spends these funds on teaching personnel to work with students. Thank you, especially, to those families who came straight from the Cross Country meet.

Carpool Safety Reminders

For the safety of all of our children, please follow the carpool plan, approved by N. Ogden City Police. Do not abandon your car along the curb in front of school. If you need to get out of your car, please park your car in a space and take care of your business. We kindly ask that drivers devote their full attention to carpool and refrain from talking on cell phones. Please use our best grace and courtesy and sing; singing always helps.

From Ms. Clarissa, Elementary Music Teacher

Dear Upper Elementary Parents,

As a part of our Montessori music curriculum, your child will have the opportunity to learn the recorder in upper elementary music classes. Learning recorder helps with reading music, self control, team work, and more. Our recorder unit will go from October 4th to December 14th. Every week we will be practicing recorders as a part of music class.

Maria Montessori Academy has 59 recorders in our music supplies for in-class student use. That’s almost enough for two class sets. After our recorder lesson every day, each class will wash, disinfect, and rinse their recorders and set them out to dry for the next class.

We will be playing recorders in our December concert (date TBA). However, only 59 students will be able to use the school recorders that evening.

If you would like to purchase your student a recorder to practice at home and bring to school for their personal use, please follow these guidelines:

  • Soprano Recorder
  • Key of C
  • German Fingering
  • Natural Color (White, Black, Brown, or Beige ONLY - no other colors)

DO NOT BUY AT THE DOLLAR STORE

If you are buying on Amazon, please look for a quality brand like Yamaha or Angel.

Riverton Music has great Suzuki recorders with these specifications. They are $4.99.

If you do not follow these guidelines, the recorder will not sound the same as the school recorders, your student’s recorder will constantly be out of tune no matter how much they adjust their air flow or finger positions.

Your student’s music classes are on Thursdays / Fridays. If you are buying a recorder for their personal use, please help them remember to bring it on their music class days from October – December. Thank you.

If you have any questions regarding music classes at Montessori, please email me at clunt@mariamontessoriacademy.org.

Thank you,

Clarissa Lunt

FIRST LEGO League Team

Maria Montessori Academy will host a FIRST LEGO League team this fall! This year’s theme is "Into Orbit," and should be an exciting and enriching experience for the kids.

Students in grades 4-8 may apply to the team by writing 1 paragraph about why they want to be on the team and how they can contribute. Paragraphs should be submitted to the office. The team will meet once a week on Thursdays from 3:15-5:15 pm through December. There will also be occasional scrimmages and competitions on evenings and weekends. The cost to join the league is $30, payable to the office.

More information is available at https://www.firstinspires.org/. Parents are encouraged to volunteer and should let the front office know of their availability when their kids apply.

Imaginative thinking and teamwork build tomorrow’s innovators. With adult Coaches to guide them, FIRST® LEGO® League teams apply science, engineering, and math concepts, plus a big dose of imagination, to develop solutions to real-world challenges. They also design, build, and program LEGO MINDSTORMS®-based robots to perform autonomous “missions” on a playing field. Along the way, they develop critical thinking, team-building, and presentation skills.

Trust Lands Committee

We are seeking parent/guardian volunteers to serve on the Trust Lands Committee. This committee will be required to observe a training video and meet a few times a year (sometimes only digitally) in order to determine how best to spend the Trust Land Funds. If you are interested, please email René at rbaker@mariamontessoriacademy.org.

Attendance and Punctuality

It is important that your child attend school every day and be punctual. Please make every effort to honor this time in school. This teaches our children valuable practical life skills and allows each child to maximize their learning time at school.

If your child arrives after the start of school at 8:30am, please accompany them into the office to sign them in as tardy - after you park your car in a parking space. Junior High students who arrive after 8:30am will need to enter the building through the main doors.

Track it Forward & Volunteering

We are a community school and we request that all families volunteer at least 40 hours per school year, cumulatively between all family members. MAPA utilizes a online program called Track it Forward to advertise school events, opportunities to volunteer, and to calculate each family's progress toward meeting the goal of 40 hours. You can even get to it on your smart phone.

Please sign up asap on Track it Forward. After you sign up, you will be approved for the group and will get an email indicating as such. After this, get online and click on the upcoming events page. If the main calendar is too overwhelming, click on "filter by category" and only check those teachers you would like to view. I suggest also checking "school wide" events so you don't miss anything.

Track it Forward is where you will sign up for your turn to bring snack to the classroom and where early childhood families sign up for a KEEP assessment time slot.

Join MAPA on Facebook

Head over to the new and official Facebook page for MAPA, MMA's parent organization: https://www.facebook.com/NorthOgdenMAPA/

The Montessori Academy Parent Association (MAPA) is the Parent-Teacher Organization for Maria Montessori Academy. This organization is used to facilitate communication and involvement between parents and teachers. MAPA is currently seeking volunteers who are interested in joining this organization to ensure that the needs of Maria Montessori Academy’s student body are being fulfilled.
