I am originally from Los Angeles, California and attended California State University at Long Beach majoring in Communication Design. I worked for over 10 years in marketing communication before moving to Texas and starting a family. When my children were young, I went back to school and earned a dual teaching certification in special education and general education. I have taught academic subjects in PISD for 15 years as a special education teacher. 13 of those years were spent right here at Mathews Elementary!
This year….I am excited to start teaching 4th grade! I have a passion for all subjects and will be teaching reading/language arts, social studies and science.
My own children grew up in PISD schools. Becky will started as a student in the A&M Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program this fall. Brian will be an A&M graduate in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology/Oceanography. He interned this summer at the National Weather Service Center in Fort Worth.
My dear husband, John, and I have been married for 28 years. We love Aggies, animals, science and would rather be visiting a US national park than anywhere else in the world. We have a big, beautiful, and goofy Boxer dog named Copper.
What your students are learning about!
We are finishing Unit on Place Value. This unit covers place value to the hundred billions and decimals to the hundredths. Students are expected to create models, round, and find relationships within these places.
UNIT 1 TEST is Thursday, September 6th.
Unit 2 will be covering addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals.
Writing-
We are off and running! We are exploring the three genres of writing: narrative, expository and persuasive. We are learning to narrow our focus in our writing. We are reviewing grammar and steps in the writing process.
Reading-
We have been diving into fiction story elements along with poetry. Students will be learning about sensory language in poetry. Along with writing their own similes and metaphors.
Social Studies-
This year is all about TEXAS! Throughout the year we will be talking about all the important people and events that shaped Texas history. Right now we are looking at the physical features of Texas and its regions. In the next few weeks they will be researching a region and making a map of that region in class. They might be asking you to get some supplies for the map when the time comes.
Science-
We are learning all about the different topics that we will be digging deeper into later in the school year! So far we have learned about different types of Energy and scientific explanations. Ask us about Claims, Evidence and Reasoning. We will be diving into circuits in a few weeks and cannot wait!
