Is your catastrophic event weather related, geologic in nature, and/or caused by humans?
80% of most tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean of the “Ring of Fire”.
What are the main features of this disaster, how does it form?
Where and when is this nature disaster most likely to occur?
THE RING OF FIRE
The "Ring of Fire" (map) is an arc stretching from New Zealand, along the eastern edge of Asia, north across the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and south along the coast of North and South America. The Ring of Fire is composed over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. The ring of fire has tectonic plates all around it, and volcanos.
Plate BoundThe plates are all moving in different directions and at different speeds (from 2 cm to 10 cm per year--about the speed at which your fingernails grow) in relationship to each other. The plates are moving around like cars in a demolition derby, which means they sometimes crash together, pull apart, or sideswipe each other. The place where the two plates meet is called a plate boundary. Boundaries have different names depending on how the two plates are moving in relationship to each other
