English
English I Honors: This week, students finished up their short fiction unit, with the study of Poe's "Fall of the House of Usher." As we move into next week, we will continue to prepare for the North Carolina final exam. Students are reviewing key concepts such as reading and interpreting fiction, as well as non-fiction texts author's purposes in writing, figurative devices, and using context clues to determine word meanings. Students completed the week with a study and analysis of a speech. Next week, students will read two additional short fiction works, and a sample of a critical literary analysis.
English IV Honors: Students began the week by analyzing group specific themes from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Students created an analysis chart and a quote theme poster. Pulling from the theme of “isolation,” students moved on to an evaluation of Tennyson’s poem The Lady of Shalott, creating a visual representation of the plot line of the poem. The theme of Isolation was applied to the poem. Students then began a symbolism task tied to the next piece of visual literature: the video Edward Scissorhands. Student completed the symbolism task by applying symbols to both the poem and the video to further develop the theme of isolation. Students will complete the unit with an argumentative essay focused on the potential plagiarism of the producer of the video. During the final few days of the course, students will review course tasks and participate in NCFinal Exam review.
Senior Graduation Project Presentations
The Onslow Early College High School had four students successfully present Graduation Projects:
Gabrielle Boutall, who researched the ethics of genetic engineering, worked with a biology teacher to present a DNA extraction for an Honors Biology class. Through the process of designing, developing, and presenting the lab, Gabrielle’s desire to become a genetic engineer was solidified.
Julia Eesley, who researched the attributes of traditional and experimental medicine, completed 67 hours volunteer hours at the Onslow Memorial Hospital. Her project learning included gaining personal experience, observing the patient process, and observing the combined efforts of various medical methods.
Sabryna Gromley, who researched animal health based on behaviors and instincts, completed 27 hours of volunteering for a non-profit pet adoption clinic. Part of her training allowed her to become part of the microchip implant process, administer vaccines, and test animal blood. Sabryna’s desire to become a veterinarian increased as she interacted with the animals.
Sarah Simmons, who research the impacts of pollution on the marine environment, organized a beach clean-up at Hammocks Beach State Park. Working closely with her mentor, Sarah designed and published the event. Sarah organized and directed the clean-up activity. Leaning to communicate an idea, communicating with involved parties, and organizing an event from start to finish are practices that will serve her well as she pursues a degree in marine biology.
