One of the most effective strategies to engage students in any classroom is to plan for intentional conversation. In virtual settings, this can be quite a challenge!! The challenge is worth it, though, as the effect size of classroom discussion is 0.82 - that is HUGE (Hattie, 2018)!! According to this ASCD article, Three Strategies for Better Online Discussions discusses these three concepts:
- provide clear participation guidelines,
- show students how to participate, and
- help students use visual strategies to make better connections.
