CGSD Newsletter

February 2020

Dear CGSD Community,

As you know, our Board of Education is committed to the health, safety and well-being of our students and staff. As communities grow restless with worsening concerns related to the coronavirus (COVID-19), we look to our partners at the Department of Education, local health departments and, ultimately, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for guidance. The path ahead is uncertain, but there are things we can all do to help prevent the spread of this, and all, communicable diseases.

To be clear, there are no immediate threats relative to the coronavirus in our schools at this time. That said, we are taking steps and making additional plans to help stem the tide of any potential spread of this and other viruses. Our custodial department is disinfecting our schools and will continue to sanitize our buildings as a precaution. Our nurses have and will continue to visit classrooms to speak with students about proper handwashing techniques, coughing techniques and general hygiene. When hand washing with soap is not possible, students and staff have access to hand sanitizers throughout our schools.

There has been speculation about virtual learning and the closure of schools, but these claims are unsubstantiated; the Centers for Disease Control has no basis, given the most recent update, to close our schools at this time.

The CDC recommends individuals and families follow everyday preventative measures. Please discuss these preventive actions with your children:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use hand sanitizer (with 60%-95% alcohol, if possible). Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and the State of New Jersey Department of Health websites provide information on the prevention of coronavirus at the following links:

The CGSD will continue to closely monitor the situation and collaborate with health and government organizations to ensure the well-being of our entire community governing the prevention, control, and reporting of communicable disease. We all have a part to play in staying healthy and we encourage everyone to follow these recommendations.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Fetherman

Superintendent

Work towards the completion of our security project continues. The new digital infrastructure is in place to support recent upgrades and newly installed devices, including surveillance cameras, alarm systems, electronic door locks, backup power generator, and phone systems.

In the meantime, our staff will continue to make safety and security a top priority through ongoing emphasis on vigilance, communication, and participation in routine and frequent security drills alongside our partners within the CGPD, whose members frequent our buildings and campuses.

Please check back with us here for the most recent construction updates. Thanks!
