Principal's message

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. Our SIS/SMS staff is rested and ready. Many have attended trainings and are ready to integrate new knowledge into their daily lessons. We were able to send twelve staff members to the AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) Summer Institute in July. It is always enjoyable to learn and challenge ourselves as educators. We look forward to sharing our new knowledge with our entire staff in order to better prepare students for high school, college and career related opportunities. I am excited for our new 8th grade student leaders, our amazing returning 5th, 6th and 7th graders and I can’t wait to get to know all the new incoming 4th graders. Please make sure you visit the website for the school supply list. All students in grades 6th through 8th will be using a binder system that is designed to create prepared, organized and academic minded students. With this being the fourth year of our binder system, we have purchased some 3” binders that are for sale. These binders are heavy duty and will withstand the daily life of a middle school student. We are offering them for $7.00, which is a 50% savings.

The parent-student handbook provides important information about our school's philosophy, procedures, policies, curriculum, schedules and our Vision and Mission Statements. The handbook is a guide to the way we operate as a school. Also included in the handbook are behavioral expectations and guidelines for students, often the most referred to pages in the book. There have been some changes since last year, so everyone should read the handbook carefully, especially the discipline section, and use it as a reference throughout the year. I would also like to remind parents/guardians to pay particular attention to your child’s clothing. We have a dress code policy; remember with the changing fashion trends in society, not all are acceptable within a school setting. The handbook is available on the NSSD website.

Consistent and clear communication with parents is essential to student success at SIS/SMS. Our handbook is only the start. Our monthly SIS newsletter, SMS Weekly Update, Facebook, Twitter, planners, electronic reader board, Monday folders (SIS), Teacher Messaging and website updates keep parents informed of special events, sports schedules, and goings-on in classrooms and around the entire school. SMS Athletics has its own Facebook page as well, keeping parents up to date on athletic business. The newsletter and weekly update is sent via email to parents that have given us a reliable e-mail and is also available on-line. Parents may also communicate with the school and individual staff through e-mail or on the telephone. Parent conferences will be the week of November 4th, however, if you have questions or would like to meet with your student’s teachers prior to November, we would be happy to do so. This provides a great opportunity to become more involved in your child’s education. We encourage you to volunteer in the school as well. If you have questions about volunteering, just contact Donna Hill at SIS or Wendy Nau/Christina Bridge at SMS offices.

This year, we welcome a few new staff members to SIS/SMS. We are excited to have them join the Stayton community and look forward to having them on board. Know that staff at SIS/SMS will work very hard, every day, to create a positive and welcoming school climate for students. We want to make strong connections with students, offer them an engaging curriculum, and help them develop and grow into responsible and respectful human beings. Not a day goes by when we are not reflecting on how we can improve as a school.

I look forward to this school year and most of all to developing a relationship with you and your child.

Michael Proctor - Principal - SIS/SMS

Communication is Key

Classroom Folders: Teachers will send home info about our school, the community and their classroom every Monday.

E-mail: We will send periodic e-mails to guardians informing them of upcoming events. If you don't receive at least one e-mail a month, please contact the school office to confirm we have your current e-mail address.

Website: This is a great place to find all of our info, links, forms and e-mail addresses for staff.

Auto-dialer: This is used to notify parents of emergency closures & events. Please note that attendance calls (for unexcused, absent students) will be going out twice daily at 10 am and 1 pm.

Facebook: We utilize FB as a way to communicate with parents. Our page is under: Stayton Intermediate/Middle School. There is a separate page for the PTC and our sports programs. Please notify the school office if you DO NOT want your child's picture posted on Facebook. We do post student photos from our assemblies and display the names of winners, but do not "tag" the actual photos with names.

Download the App: Download the "North Santiam SD 29J" app from iTunes App Store or Google Play. Your log in will be your phone number (or the primary contact phone that is in our system). Click "Forgot Password" and follow the steps. You will only have to log-in one time.

After School Enrichment Program

Looking for after school care? The Salem-Keizer Education Foundation is offering "Enrichment Academy", an after school program for students K-5. The program runs M-F from after school until 6 pm. Monthly fees are $55-$95 (depending on free/reduced lunch status). Our students are taken by bus to Stayton Elementary immediately after school and are picked up there by parents. You can find out more information by going to the North Santiam School District website and clicking on the "For Parents" tab. There is an "After School Program" tab under that. You can also contact Salem-Keizer Education Foundation at 503-364-2933 with any questions you may have.

School Sickness Policy

To help reduce the risk of absences due to illness, please keep your child home if they have had a fever of 100.5 or higher, have been vomiting or had diarrhea in the last 24 hours.

If your child needs to take medication during school hours you must sign an authorization form. The medication must be in its original package (no baggies) and kept in the office to be dispensed by school staff. An adult will need to bring the medication to the school office, not the student. Students are not able to carry items like cough drops, Tylenol, Advil, Tums or Neosporin with them. Thank you for your help with this.

Help Wanted

Our school thrives with lots of parent involvement. If you'd like to help, ask your child's teacher or the office. Our library needs your help. If you are able to help in our library or with our book fairs, please contact Tammy Baxter at or give her a call at 503-769-2198. We will have you complete a background check application which can take about 1 week to process. If you'd like to go on a field trip, please complete one now to avoid last minute rush to be approved. A new background check application is required every school year.
