Hello Broken Arrow Families!
As you may have heard, Covid vaccines are now approved and available for children ages 5-11. Here are some frequently asked questions to school nurses that you may have been wondering about.
What is the benefit of getting vaccinated? There are lots of benefits! Not only does vaccination provide protection to your child but to those around them, additionally if your student is exposed to covid and is fully vaccinated they do not have to quarantine from school or participate in school testing protocols (unless they become symptomatic after exposure). This would mean missing less school for them and less missed work days for parents. Vaccinated individuals who do contract covid are less likely to have severe symptoms and spread to others, helping to keep our community and your family healthier.
When is my child "fully vaccinated"? We consider individuals to be fully vaccinated 2 weeks after their second dose if receiving Pfizer or Moderna and 2 weeks after their first dose if receiving J&J. Currently only the 2 dose Pfizer vaccine is approved for students ages 5-11.
Where can I get my child vaccinated? There are lots of places in Douglas County to get vaccinated! CVS and Walgreens offer online registration for local appointments. Douglas County Health Department has vaccine clinics available during evenings and weekends. You can view the schedule and register at https://www.ldchealth.org/getmyvaccine (see registration codes below). You can also call your doctor's office or pharmacy of choice to inquire about vaccine availability.
How much does the vaccine cost? The vaccine provider may ask for your health insurance information when you register but it is unlikely there will be any out-of-pocket costs for your family.
Will my child still have to wear a mask at school if they are vaccinated? Yes. The Lawrence Public Schools does have a current mask mandate and all individuals are required to wear a mask regardless of vaccination status.
Is it required for my student to get the covid vaccine to attend school? No. While we do encourage all eligible persons to get vaccinated, it is not required.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your primary care provider with any other questions about the Covid vaccine.

Broken Arrow Family Bravo...Mrs. Martin!
I adore this lady! I was at the last conference Wednesday evening and she spent an hour with me giving me so many ideas on how to help our son be successful. I'm pretty sure she was the last teacher in the building by this point. She walked me to the front and gave me a great big hug. I needed that hug probably as much as she did. We are new to BA this year and I was so nervous about this kiddo of mine being brand new to public school. Today after dismissal, she spent the time helping my son find his long-lost mask on the back playground, again, greeting me with another much-needed hug. I could not have asked for a better teacher for him! She is so genuine, enthusiastic, and without a doubt, found her calling with teaching. Thank you Ms. Martin for being an amazing 1st-grade teacher!!!!
PICK UP AND DROP OFF REMINDERS:
Thank you for doing everything you can to help Broken Arrow be a safe place to be!
1. Doors open at 7:45. As it gets colder, please do not drop children off more than a few minutes early.
2. Parents can pick up from the curb or the parking lot, not from the middle of the road. That is dangerous for students and keeps traffic backed up.
3. Students will only be released if vehicles are along the curb or in the parking lot. If parents are in the parking lot, students will cross the crosswalk and walk to their vehicle next to the median or to their parent standing on the median.
4. Please share this important information with others who may be helping with pick up or drop off.
5. Everyone, adults and students, should cross the road using the crosswalk only.
