Content Information
Fourth Grade Language Arts, Social Studies
Language Arts: Students are continuing their focus upon GUM rules and applying those rules appropriately. Please continue to encourage your student to work carefully and diligently on all tasks. Fourth graders are now putting together their "Eight Parts of Speech Magic Books"; the completion of these books will count as a classwork project. In Writer's Workshop, fourth graders will be focusing upon the persuasive genre. Their writing will coincide with the study of European and Spanish explorers in Social Studies. Also, students are almost finished with the class reading selection Bud, Not Buddy; fourth graders will complete a cumulative project reflecting this book at the end of January.
Social Studies: Students will begin their study of European, French, and Spanish explorers this month. They will be completing an explorer's project; this project will be completed in class.

Fourth Grade Math, Science
Math: We are still working on our Fraction unit. We will be finishing up the addition and subtraction portion in the next week or so, and will then be moving on to the multiplying and dividing sections. Near the end of the unit, we will be learning about the relationship between fractions and decimals, which will lead us into computing with decimals.
Science: In January, we will be finishing the "Objects in Motion" unit. Students will be given the details of our "Simple Machines" project soon. They will be required to make two of the six machines at home and the requirements will be sent out at a later time.

Fifth Grade Language Arts, Social Studies
Language Arts: Students will be continuing their study of sentence diagramming as we focus our GUM efforts on parts of speech; we have been diagramming appositives. Fifth graders are encouraged to utilize appositives in writing, as using them provides context clues for readers. In Writer's Workshop, fifth graders have competed their tall tales; we will be publishing the tales next month. The writing genre for January will be persuasive writing; students will reach across the curriculum to write persuasively about the Civil War. Also, fifth grade students are finished with the class text selection The Watsons Go To Birmingham. Cumulative Reading projects reflecting this title are due Friday, January 18.
Social Studies: Fifth graders are currently studying various aspects of the War Between the States. Our studies will focus upon major causes, generals, and battles of the Civil War. Our Civil War unit will also coincide with our writing genre of persuasive writing.

Fifth Grade Math, Science
Math: We are still working on our Fraction unit. We are currently reviewing addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. We will shortly be moving on to multiplication and division, and therefore will be finishing up fractions very soon. Our next unit in Math will be Geometry.
Please make sure students are working on Math homework every night (Mon-Thurs). It is very important for them to go home and continue to practice the skill that we worked on in class.
Science: We will be finishing up our Genetics and Heredity unit within the next two weeks. The next unit we will be doing in Science is Electricity and Magnetism.
