Language Workshop
First graders have wrapped up their unit on inquiry and are moving into our final question of "How have I grown this year" We will reflect on all of the things that we have done throughout our time together and how they have contributed to our success in first grade, as well as prepared us to be second graders.
Science and Social Studies
First graders have been exploring various types of maps. We have learned how to read maps, use a compass to give directions and a key to find different places. Students have also created their own maps. While exploring features of maps, we talked about our place in the world. We read "Me on a Map" which started our conversations about our city, state, country, continent and world.
Math Workshop
First graders have been doing a lot of problem solving in math workshop the last few weeks. During this time we have worked to solve logic problems that require us to think hard about what we need to find, as well as explain how we reached the conclusion that we did. Students as working hard to show all that they know as they prepare for second grade math!

Language Workshop and Science
First graders have been working hard to learn about discoveries and inquiry in Language Workshop and Science. The question they have been focusing on is "How does my curiosity influence inquiry?" They have been reading and discussing nonfiction texts to find new discoveries and ask questions about light, sound, and different scientists. Students have been using what they have learned about sound to plan and create their own musical instruments in the makerspace. These instruments will be played during the concert next week!
Math Workshop
In Math Workshop, first graders have recently wrapped up adding numbers to 100. Students worked very hard to learn how they can model addition using Base Ten Blocks and how they can check their work using a hundred chart thanks to their place value understanding! In the upcoming weeks, students will be working on subtracting tens within 100. We will also be completing MAP testing for math during this time.
Reading Workshop
Students are continuing to apply their reading strategies as they read independently each day. They are reading over twenty minutes independently each day! They are also working hard to figure out the meanings of new words using context clues, discover the moral of different stories, and work on determining the main idea of a text. Looking ahead, we will be beginning the reading portion of MAP testing next week.
