Cougar Connection
St. Columba Catholic School - News every Friday - 9/11/20
We did it! We made it through our first week of having students on campus! I am so proud of our community and the efforts we made to make this week happen. I am grateful for the patience of our families, both with on campus and online students. While this week was not perfect, it was definitely a success!
As we conclude this week, we are reminded that today is September 11th. I know for so many of us that our memory of that day is filled with powerful memories and emotions. I was moved by something that Mr. Dallas talked about with his students about how unified our country was after that day and how we came together. As we are presently surrounded by challenges in our country and are heading into election season, I pray that we remember how much we all have in common and how we can continue to support each other.
Next week will be a full week of school, but due to continued high heat, in conjunction with decreasing air quality, we won't be able to have full days next week. I have been monitoring upcoming temperatures, and we will have half days next week on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Monday, Thursday, and Friday being full days. Even though Friday was a scheduled half day, it will be a full day because of the additional half days we have taken so far.
Finally, our students will begin their STAR Assessments next week. On Thursday and Friday, our 2nd - 8th graders will be taking their STAR Reading Assessments. On those days, please ensure that your child gets a good night sleep and has a good breakfast. Information will be provided for our online students about how to complete those Assessments at home.
Here is a look ahead at the upcoming events on campus:
- Monday, September 14: K-8 Full Day
- Tuesday, September 15: K-8 Heat Half Day (Dismissal at 12:15)
- Wednesday, September 16: K-8 Heat Half Day (Dismissal at 12:15)
- Thursday, September 17: 2nd-8th Grade STAR Reading Assessment; K-8 Full Day
- Friday, September 18: 2nd-8th Grade STAR Reading Assessment; K-8 Full Day
Blessings,
Mr. Amann

STAR Assessments
As a refresher, we formally assess our students in Math and Reading three times per year. We have entered our Fall Testing Window and will begin with STAR Reading.
Students in 2nd-8th Grade will take their STAR Reading test next week during their Technology period.
Students in 2nd-8th Grade will take their STAR Math test the following week during their Technology period.
Students in Kindergarten-2nd grade will take their STAR Early Literacy based upon teacher and student schedules. You will be provided at least 2 days of notice.
Student scores will be sent home in the weeks following the assessments and discussed at Parent-Teacher conferences.
Remember, a single assessment is only one measure of your child's abilities. That being said, it provides us meaningful information for planning and grouping purposes.
Return of Chromebooks
We are still missing A LOT of Chromebooks!
Unless you are Online Only, please return your Chromebook ASAP!
We need to inventory our devices to determine if additional devices need to be ordered.
If your child borrowed a Chromebook and he/she is not Online Only and your Chromebook is not returned by 9/16, you will be billed with a $300 replacement fee. There will be no exceptions to this.
We will work as quickly as possible to ensure all students at home with device needs will have a device.
If you have an Online Only student and do not have another device at home, you may keep the device you borrowed until your child returns to campus.
Uniform Flexibility
We recognize that many uniform pieces are currently back ordered. We will be lenient and flexible with all students and families about the uniform until the beginning of October.
If you have uniforms from last year, you are welcome to wear those if you do not have the new ones yet.
If you are new to the school, you can wear what you have, even if it is not the right uniform for that day. If not, you are welcome to wear something that is close to the actual uniform, such as a navy skirt, a solid polo, etc.
Save the Date: K-8 Picture Day
Our Kindergarten-8th Grade School Picture Day will be September 22nd.
If you are having your child stay online, please be sure to make some arrangements in the morning to bring your child in for pictures. After pictures, your child will go home.
Preschool Picture Day, along with a makeup day for K-8 will be in November!
