Lively Middle School

September 30, 2022

Greetings Falcon Nation,

This week I had the honor of hosting Cynthia Soliz, Lively parent, for “Principal for a Day”. She had an opportunity to visit classrooms, monitor hallways, tour the Limitless Center, attend meetings and more! Here’s how Ms. Soliz described her experience on Twitter:

“Thrilled to have spent the day as the @LivelyFalcons Principal for a Day! Quite a feat what Doc Holiday does for the kids and the school!! I'm positively exhausted! Thank you @AustinEdFund @AustinISD @anthonymays5 for this invaluable opportunity.”

This Week’s Newsletter has information about:

  • CAC date change

CAC Date Change

Our 2nd CAC meeting for the year has been rescheduled to accommodate the parent conferences.

October 4th - CAC Meeting 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. via zoom (CAC meeting link)

Tardy Sweeps

Recently we have noticed an increase in the number of students in the hallway after the tardy bell rings at the end of our passing period. We need your support with encouraging your child to get to class on time, every period, every day. Please have a discussion at home with your child and help us teach strategies that need improvement such as: minimizing the number of times they need to go to their locker, decreasing the amount of time spent talking to friends during passing periods, and being aware of the time the tardy bell will ring.

In an effort to minimize the number of students in the hall and maximize instructional time, we are implementing random hallway sweeps. Students were informed of the hall sweeps multiple times during Advisory, on the announcements, and reminders from teachers and administrators during passing periods. Lively staff will conduct random hallway sweeps weekly. Students who are still in the hallway after the tardy bell will be marked tardy and assigned after-school detention. Students that have 3 or more tardies are assigned after-school detention.

Students who continue to be tardy and accrue 5 or more tardies will receive additional consequences. Consequences for excessive tardies may include behavior plans, community service, or referral for truancy filing with court (severe cases).

Early Release Day Friday October 7th

There are two Friday early release days on the 2022- 2023 Academic Calendar, October 7, 2022 & February 17, 2023.

Students will be released at the times listed below:

  • Elementary School – 1:30 PM

  • Middle School – 2:30 PM

  • High School – 3:30 PM

  • Please review the Lively Early Release Bell Schedule (linked here)

  • District wide bus options (ALC: 3:30, Ann Richards: 3:30, LASA: 2:30, Lively: 2:30, Kealing: 1:30, Rosedale: 1:00, Gus Garcia: 2:30, Bertha Sadler Means: 2:30, International: 3:30)* Mendez not included due to a separate calendar.

Breakfast and lunch will be served on these days. On early release days the following changes will occur districtwide:

  • No High School student sharing in the afternoon

  • No ACC on those two days (They only do office hours on Fridays)

  • Transportation will be provided for all UIL events

    • No Late activities (please make sure your students ride on the afternoon buses home)

  • No mid-days after 12:00 PM and No PM Clifton classes

  • All field trips must return to campus by noon.

Dress Code

We have noticed many students that are out of dress code. Administrators will continue to have private conversations and give reminders for all students who are out of compliance with the AISD dress code. Students that are out of dress code will be asked to change, or will be provided with proper attire that follows the dress code. Please review the dress code with your child. AISD dress code can be viewed by going to https://www.austinisd.org/family-support/dress-code.

Electronic Chromebook Permission and Contract Form

We still have students who have not received their chromebooks due to misplacing their form, incomplete paperwork, or simply not turning one in. Chromebook contracts are processed on a daily basis and can take 2-3 days to issue once the contract is received. To expedite the process, I have created an electronic version of this form. If your child still has not received a chromebook:

Please scan the following QR Code to complete the Chromebook Contract electronically.

GT Referrals

Lively is pleased to announce that referrals for gifted and talented students are being accepted from September 19 to October 7. Interested parents and guardians should contact the Campus GT Advocate, Shayna Tipton, at shayna.tipton@austinisd.org for additional information regarding the GT referral process. On Friday, October 7th, parents who have requested GT referrals or information will receive a message via schoolmessenger with more details about the GT process.

GT screening and testing requires parent/guardian permission. A variety of measures are used for screening and testing including assessments for Emerging English students. For more information about the Austin ISD gifted program, please visit the Austin ISD website at tinyurl.com/AISDadvanced or call the school.

SEL Advisory Update

Next week in advisory, classes will be reviewing artwork from Bahamian artist, Tavares Strachan which is displayed at the Blanton art museum. Students will journal and discuss the different components of the artwork including the words chosen, the lighting, and who is in control of turning the light of the work on and off. Students will then contribute a picture of themselves to a classroom collage, and they will discuss how the message of the artist can be applied to our school. See the artwork below.

Big picture
For the AVID lesson in advisory, students will practice the skill of using Cornell Notes, which is an interactive way of taking notes in multiple subjects. To end the week, we will also be writing our custodians thank you posters and notes as we prepare for custodian appreciation week.

SCA Testing

Over the next two weeks, students will be taking assessments to measure their mastery in tested subject areas. These Short Cycle Assessments (SCA’s) measure how well we’re teaching our curriculum and how well students are soaking in the knowledge.

  • Short-cycle assessments are designed by Austin ISD to match our curriculum and they measure things that were taught during the grading period.

  • Students will take the SCA’s in their tested subject area classes. Each SCA will have approximately 12-20 questions, and students will have one 90-minute class period to complete each test.

  • Tests will be taken on a computer, which matches how STAAR will be administered this year.

  • 6th and 7th graders take a Math and Reading SCA. 8th graders take Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies.

Please remind your child to bring their charged Chromebook to school everyday, but especially on the days of the SCA tests. If you have specific questions about the SCA, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Falcon Flex

For this week’s Falcon Flex, we are showing off our amazing counseling team. They help support our kiddos with counseling, scheduling, safety, etc. Simply put, they are the best. We appreciate you for all that you do!
