ABOUT US

The Teen Advisory Board

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) of the Montclair Public Library is a group of teens who participate in and influence the functioning of the library, especially for teen programming and library materials. Most importantly, TAB is a forum to have your opinions and suggestions heard.

We meet the first Wednesday of each month, September - May and members receive community service hours for participating.

A NOTE FROM OUR TAB OFFICERS

Big image

By Stella Balsamini, Chairperson of TAB

Hi everyone, and welcome to Montclair Public Library’s first ever Teen Advisory Board Newsletter! This website will be posted on a lot as the year goes on, and we’re hoping to update you on all of your favorite things, like new movies, books and music, as well as make you excited about coming to the library. School has started and leaves are falling outside, which means it’s just about time to curl up with hot chocolate and read a good book or watch a new movie. In this issue of the newsletter, we’ll give you some suggestions on which ones to read and see. For those of you who have post-summertime sadness and are wishing you were still on vacation, we have a list of the best summer songs you can listen to and a page of jokes to cheer you up.

Also, there’s never been a better time to go into the library. We have so many fun days coming up that were planned for teens, by teens. New this year are “Passport to Flavor” events once a month where you can take a “trip” to a foreign country by making snacks from that place. We’ll be starting with Mexico on September 24th (I’m pumped about getting to eat salsa and chips.) The library will also be having its annual Banned Book Week movie marathon starting that same week, so be a rebel and drop by. As always, there will also be plenty of drop in crafts throughout the year.

I’m so excited about all the cool pages to read on this website and all the events planned in the library, and I know for sure that this year will be great!

Did you know that September is library card sign up month? Unlock the power of your card today!

YA BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

Beloved by Toni Morisson

by Rohan Israni

Beloved by Toni Morrison is truly a masterpiece that depicts a cruel reality of American history relating to slavery. Sethe, one of the protagonists in the novel, kills her daughter, Beloved so that she can escape her fate. This deed of killing one's own blood, in order for her to escape slavery although considered a sin and is a completely deranged idea, in the eyes of Sethe she was doing the right thing. The novel depicts a harsh but true picture that prevailed in society during those times. The characters in the novel suffer physical, emotional and spiritual deterioration even in the wake of freedom from slavery. The pain and suffering has a lasting impact on the victims and they need to be healed as they are scared in one way or the other. The readers at hit with some tough questions pertaining to life as they read the novel. I personally enjoyed reading the novel and would definitely recommend it .The author is involved in each characters life to such an extent that she can put her heart and soul across to the readers.

POETRY

Guilt

by Taz

It drags me down during the day,
Pressing me on, yet forcing me to stay.
It taints good moments or happy one to come,
Making me realize how I've been dumb.
It churns my stomach hours at a time,
Letting me ponder all of my crimes.
It leaves me always feeling unrest,
Knowing what I did will put someone's trust to test.
It makes me scared of what the future holds,
Seeing what awaits makes me feel cold.
It forces me to see the other things I could have done,
But now it is over, and guilt has won.

MUSIC

Top 5 Summer Songs

by Adarian Sneed

Cheerleader--Omi

Think back to the beginning of summer, end of school. We heard this song everywhere! And its caribbean flavor mixed with pop made it the hit summer song. Fun Fact: Artist, Omi wrote this song 8 years ago! Wonder what took so long to become a hit.

See You Again--Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa

Rapper, Wiz Khalifa collaborates with rising pop star, Charlie Puth, to create a ballad like song for the hit movie Fast and Furious 7. Dedicated to the late, great Paul Walker of the Fast and Furious movies. A wonderful song for a wonderful man

Bad blood--Taylor Swift

Nothing at all bad about this song. Tay does it again! One of the many hits on her 1989 album, this one became the summer song because of the extraordinary music video. Literally star-studded with famous female celebrities kicking butt! This song/video truly shows how powerful women can be.

Can't Feel My Face--Weeknd

The Weeknd soared to the top with this song. It is that kind of song that just makes you want to fist pump on the chorus. Perfect for the summer. Not only is The Weeknd very talented at doing his hair, but simply performing as well. While performing at this year's VMA's all he needed was the mic and he gave a smashing performance.

Watch Me--Silento

Artist, Silento was definitely not silent about this hit. Everyone knows it and everyone loves it. Whether you hit the whip perfectly or not it doesn't matter. The thing is that there was a song this summer that all ages knew and could relate to. Ask almost anyone to fill in this blanks, "Now watch me ____. Now watch me _____." and I'm sure you'll get the answers.
