Bonny Slope Families,

A favorite novel around here is “Charlotte’s Web” by E. B. White. A quote from that book resonates with us at this time every year:

These autumn days will shorten and grow cold. The leaves will shake loose from the trees and fall. Christmas will come, then the snows of winter. You will live to enjoy the beauty of the frozen world, for you mean a great deal to Zuckerman and he will not harm you, ever. Winter will pass, the days will lengthen, the ice will melt in the pasture pond. The song sparrow will return and sing, the frogs will awake, the warm wind will blow again. All these sights and sounds and smells will be yours to enjoy, Wilbur — this lovely world, these precious days…”

Charlotte explains the cyclical nature of life to her dear friend Wilbur. With our trees nearly barren of leaves, and the weather so cold and stormy, it’s comforting to know it’s all part of the cycle of life, and the grand circle we all live in. We hope that these colder, shorter days allow you to build some precious days with your families.

Please note the calendar changes for next week, resulting in no school next week for our families. The Staff Development Workday schedules for the day after the Thanksgiving Break has been moved to next Monday, and the BSD has closed schools for that Tuesday as well.

We are so thankful to be able to serve such a warm and wonderful community as Bonny Slope.

Did you know?

The Beaverton School District, Nutrition Services Department participates in the metro food scrap collection program. Currently 50 Beaverton School kitchens capture organic waste which is picked up weekly by haulers and taken to composting facilities.

40% of food produced in the U.S. goes to waste. Food waste is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters because it releases a gas called methane that is 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. We are participating in the collective goal to reduce the amount of food that ends up in landfills.

The following is a list of food waste currently being collected:

  • Fruits and veggies
  • Grains, (bread, rice, pasta)
  • Meat (chicken, beef)
  • Dairy (cheese, yogurt)
  • Leftovers, scraps
  • Spoiled food

The food scraps from participating restaurants, grocery stores, schools and other businesses across the region are converted to compost at facilities near Salem and Corvallis.
