A letter from Jordan Mills and Bobbie Brown

November 12, 2021

Dear Bridgeport Families,

We are excited to announce two upcoming school wide activities to promote respect and inclusion through our No Place for Hate project. This project includes student leadership and community involvement to plan activities that teach students about identity and kindness. Each project includes teaching and an opportunity for discussion. Please take a look at the details and resources below.

November 15-17: Quilters Project

In this project, our Art Literacy program and our No Place for Hate program combine forces! Students will view this slideshow in their homeroom classes on November 15 or 16. Teachers will use these notes that accompany the slideshow. On November 17, during specials, students will complete their own quilt square using paper, colors and paint to represent themselves. These quilt squares will be added to our school wide quilt!

December, 2021: Imprints Lesson

This school wide lesson will take place in classrooms. Teachers will take their students through our annual lesson that teaches students how our words make permanent imprints on the hearts and minds of other people using this slideshow. They will talk about identity, including differences and similarities, and how we can make positive imprints on our peers. Student leaders will share their experiences via video and following the lesson, students will discuss their plans for making positive imprints on others, writing or drawing their ideas on hearts that they will place on their class’ “Bridgeport student” using this lesson plan.

These lessons are an important step in making sure that our school environment is welcoming for all of our Bridgeport students so that we can focus on learning and growing. Students will not learn unless they feel safe, valued and included. Since starting these lessons a few years ago, we have seen an improvement in the number of incidents involving hurtful and hateful actions and speech. While there is still work to be done, these No Place for Hate activities are one proactive action that we can take. They also help us with teaching and healing when hurtful situations occur.

Please reach out with any questions or if you are interested in being involved with our No Place for Hate project.

Sincerely,

Jordan Mills, Principal

Bobbie Brown, Associate Principal

Atentamente, Jordan Mills, director Bobbie Brown, directora asociada

Student Feedback Forms

Families,

Teachers have worked to get your student's feedback forms ready! You will have access to see them on Canvas on Monday 11/15.

We will also be sending a paper copy home with your student on Friday 11/19.

So please look for those coming home in your student's backpack.

BUSES ONLY DURING ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL TIMES

Big picture
We ask that parents DO NOT park or drive through the bus lane during arrival and dismissal times. This lane is reserved for buses, district transportation vans, and child care transportation ONLY. They are all on a very tight schedule to transport other students to other schools. Regular student drop off happens in the lane directly leading to either Borland Rd and Joshua St.

Your cooperation is very much appreciated!

Looking to volunteer?

We are excited to be able to have volunteers back in our buildings! Please click HERE to access the district web page to complete the three requirements necessary to volunteer in any TTSD building.

Three Requirements are:

  1. Complete Volunteer Application & Criminal History Background Check
  2. Complete Mandatory Online Training and email certificate to tbaumann@ttsd.k12.or.us
  3. Upload COVID-19 Vaccination Card

All volunteers must make arrangements with their students' teacher prior to checking into the office. If you would like to volunteer for a specific school event, please email bridgeportvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com

Please ensure your Volunteer Application has been approved before making arrangements to volunteer in a TTSD building.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office at 503-431-4200.

ART LITERACY IS BACK!

Our Art Literacy focus this year is on Quilters, Frida Kahlo, and Van Gogh. Art Literacy will take place a little differently this year than it has in the past! Our Art Literacy coordinator is Elaine Schooler. Parent and community volunteers will be recruited to assist with the projects.

Please consider packing an extra set of clothing for your student:

With the very wet weather we are having, students of all grades are coming to the office in need of a quick change of clothing. We recommend parents keep an extra set of clothing for their student in their backpack.

Unfortunately, we have depleted the limited supply of clothing we had in our health room. So it would be much easier if they have their own clothing to change into.

If we have loaned your student clothes and you are no longer in need of them, feel free to wash and return them.(Except underwear)

**AND if you would like to donate new or gently used clothing to our health room we would greatly appreciate it! We are in need of girls leggings in all sizes (K-5) and sweatpants for both boys and girls.

Is your student going to be absent?

Please be sure to call or email the office and let us know the reason for the absence(s).

The office is able to note the reasons for the absence(s) and excuse qualifying absences.

And if you'd like to message your student's teacher as well, that is great!

**Please see the contact information at the top of the newsletter.**
