A Note from our Principal
Dear Thornhill Families,
I hope everyone is safe and doing well in these challenging times. Wow! The wind was ferocious last night. As I write to you today, we still have gusts in the 40 mph range. Stay safe!
As the nation comes to grips with recent events in Washington, D.C. and with the upcoming inauguration that will be like no other in American history, I have been reflecting a lot on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. His vision of unity, non-violence, and love is needed now more than ever; modeling this vision in schools is of vast importance for future generations. I am mindful of how our diversity is our strength and how much work we have to do!
Black History Month - There are many ways to learn about Black History, and although our teachers do a wonderful job on this important topic, there is so much more that needs to be taught. I know you have discussions with your children about this and I wanted to point you to a powerful resource: The National Museum of African American History and Culture. It’s one museum I wish I could say that I have had the opportunity to enter. African American history is something that we need to delve into all year long. Please take some time to learn more about the multitude of achievements and contributions to American history.
Community reopening sessions are scheduled through February, hosted by OUSD. Access links and details are at www.ousd.org/reopening2021infosessions. Thornhill is in District 4 and our Reopening Session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2 from 5:30-7pm, hosted by District 4 Board Director Gary Yee.
Wishing you a wonderful week!
Mr. Daubenspeck

Oakland Virtual Schools Tours
If you have an older Thunderbird and are looking to take a virtual tour of an Oakland middle or high school, OUSD is tracking virtual tours here. If you are a parent of a 5th grader, we have posted Oakland middle school virtual tours in the 5th Grade Families Konstella group.
Additionally, explore OUSD schools through their SchoolFinder. The application window for the 2021-22 school year opened on November 16, 2020 and will close on February 5, 2021. Note this window is only if you are applying to a new school at any grade. Info will come in late spring about staying at Thornhill.

About the Thornhill Newsletter
The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.
Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Jill Evans, at newsletter@thornhillschool.org by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.
THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VPs of Communications Erin Proudfoot & Evie Nagy, PFC Presidents Rex Crum & Alicia Streight, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
