A Note From Ms. Brittney...
We're starting up the Too Good For Violence lessons this month in classrooms. Remember to go over the workbooks your child had brought home to see what they've learned!
April is National child Abuse and Prevention month. All students were sent home with a blue packet that included information for parents to read.
Next month begins our Mindful May classroom lessons which will be the final lessons I'll be doing in the classrooms. The students will be given information on how to make your own mindful glitter jar at home.
Keep an eye out for our summer edition of the counselors corner which will include reducing screen time this summer and how to get back into the routine of school!
DIY Glitter Water Bottles
A glitter bottle is one tool I use in helping students calm down. It is a great visual aid when talking about emotions. You may find that using a glitter bottle at home can help your child learn to regulate his/her emotions. Making your own glitter bottle is a fun and engaging activity to do with your child which will also help them feel some ownership in using the bottle as a tool when upset. There are a lot of different "recipes" for the glitter bottles on Pinterest. Here is a simple one I used for my bottle at work:
1. Take warm water and fill water bottle up 3/4 of the way.
2. Add a generous amount of glitter glue, put on lid, shake vigorously.
3. Add food coloring until you achieve desired color.
4. Add a generous amount of fine glitter.
5. Shake and decide if you need more glitter
6. If satisfied with glitter bottle, super glue lid onto bottle (I highly recommend doing this)
Once the glitter bottle is made, talk to your child about how you will utilize the glitter bottle (he/she may already be familiar with it from myself or the classroom teacher). When your child gets upset, the idea is to shake up the glitter bottle to help visualize how your child may be feeling on the inside at that moment. Then your child can sit and watch as the glitter slowly settles down in the water bottle, while taking deep breathes him/herself. Compare the glitter settling down to your child's emotions calming down and also settling. A lot of times students will sit in the tent in my office with some stuffed animals or pillows while they hold the bottle and watch the glitter settle. Think about establishing a safe and comfortable place in your home for the glitter bottle to stay so your child knows where to go when he/she needs to cool down. Practicing it will help remind your child where to go when needed.
Important Info- The end of this school year is coming soon! Don’t forget to pick up any medication that is in the nurse’s office before the last day of school. New forms for medication need to be filled out each year with medication needed. No medication can be transferred to the next school year.
Vaccinations- All students should be up to date on their vaccinations. Indiana state law requires you to have up to date immunizations. If you have any questions or concerns about the new school year 2019-20 requirements, please contact your school nurse.
-Due to the measles outbreak in the U.S this year, any student that doesn’t have the MMR series is at risk. You should have received a letter and phone call about this. If you have any further questions, please contact your school nurse.
Health Conditions- If your student has a specific health condition or needs special care during the school day such as medication, treatments, or monitoring, please inform your school nurse and provide your nurse with a care plan. Individual health care plans help keep your student safe and healthy.
Sick students- Please keep all sick children home from school- this includes fever greater than 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea. If you are unsure, please call your healthcare provider or school nurse for advice. Please do not send your student to school and instruct them to go directly to the nurse before the school day begins. If your student is sick, please follow the call off procedures. Again, if you have any questions or concerns please contact your school nurse.
Head Lice- It’s that time of year where our students break out their coats, scarves and hats. Please encourage your child not to share such items as hats, scarves, brushes or any personal items. Lice is not a danger to your child’s health, it is simply an annoying problem that comes around this time of year, so no need to panic. Please know that anyone and everyone can get lice. Getting lice has nothing to do with you being clean or dirty, it only has to do with the fact that you are human. It is very important to check your family for lice this time of year regularly. If you find any live lice or eggs, it is absolutely necessary to treat each “infected” person, but more importantly, you must notify the school so that we can effectively and confidentially assist you with monitoring. The school nurse can assist you with proper treatment options as well as identify and demonstrate for you what to do.
CLOTHING- Please make sure your student has an extra change of clothing in his/her backpack in case needed for unseen circumstances that may arise during the school day.
If you have any questions, please call your school nurse or visit our school web page at http://www.hobart.k12.in.us for more information on student health, school forms, and other helpful links.
