Trussville City Schools Celebrates Returning for the 2023-24 School Year at INSTITUTE

Thursday, August 3, 2023, 650 faculty and support staff from Trussville City Schools (TCS) celebrated the opening day of the year with Institute 2023. Everyone gathered in the Hewitt-Trussville High School Performing Arts Center to start the celebration. This is the one time each year that the entire faculty and staff are together in one place.

The TCS Theme for 23-24 is "Legacy".

Faculty and Staff heard from Superintendent Dr. Patrick Martin, Board President Kim DeShazo, Mayor Buddy Choat, Trussville Utilities Mike Strength, Trussville Police Deputy Chief Morette, and TCSF President Melissa Donaldson . Members of the Hewitt-Trussville High School Pep Band provided music to get everyone ready to celebrate and choir students sang the most beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. The REAL stars of the show were students Ashlyn, JW and Hannah who brought a message on behalf of all TCS students followed by an adorable video of the Class of 2036.

The meeting concluded with speaker Tim Alexander (TA) who shared how important education is and how teachers, counselors and SRO's impacted his life. Check out TA's life story on his website.

WHAT A WAY TO START THE DAY AND THE YEAR!

TCS would like to thank Mike Strength and Trussville Utilities for your support of our school system. Your support of TCS is truly appreciated!

THANK YOU Door Prize Sponsors:

Quantum Science Camp

From July 17-28, 2023, HTHS rising Junior, Conrad Jones, and HTHS AP Physics teacher, Melanie Dimler, attended Quantum Science Camp at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming. The Quantum Science Summer Camp is a unique opportunity for high schoolers and their teachers to study concepts and applications of quantum mechanics. The camp is facilitated by professors and scientists from Texas A&M University’s Institute for Quantum Science & Engineering. These experts teach selected principles of quantum science during week one of camp and review applications of quantum science, including quantum computing, during week two of camp. Students and teachers also participate in daily laboratory experimentation activities and have the opportunity to listen to several guest lecturers, including members from the National Academy of Sciences and other world-renowned scientific organizations. The opportunity for students and teachers to learn from leading researchers, scientists, and professionals in the field of quantum science provides an experience that is world class. One of the camp leaders, Dr. Marlon Scully, was the “intellectual grandson” of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Dr. Scully’s doctoral thesis advisor was Dr. Willis Lamb, and Dr. Willis Lamb’s doctoral thesis advisor was the one and only Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer. Of course, Dr. Oppenheimer’s doctoral thesis advisor was Max Born – truly world class!

Each summer, the camp accepts 12 high school teachers and 24 high school students from across the country to attend – all expenses paid. If you are interested in applying for the Quantum Science Camp (Summer 2024), contact Mrs. Dimler for more information.
