Autumn 2015
The Media Center Looking Glass 2015
Greetings from the Media Center team 2015: Linda Bunte, Jeff Greenberg, and Debbie Hruby. With the launch of the new academic year, we would like to celebrate our student lounge and study area. Many thanks to Mike DiSanto for paving the way for the re-purposing of our school library landscape. Please let us know about any suggestions or ideas you may have that will enhance our digital lounge area, new book display zones, and plant arrangements.
As the redesign of the Media Center continues to materialize, we remain committed to delivering a wide and vibrant range of information services. Please consider a class visit to the Media Center not only to perform research and access print books, databases, e-books, and periodicals, but also to let us teach 21st century information processing skills. Our library is your library, and we always strive for our collection to reflect the curricular connections, tastes, excitements, and passions of our faculty and students. In pursuit of this, please consider making purchase suggestions for our collection that will bring advantages in achieving your learning objectives.
If you are new to the Hills this year, we invite you to stop in to the Library so we can show you how to schedule classes and obtain resources.
Some of the resources we offer:
• Research databases: The Parsippany Troy-Hills School District acquires annual access to authoritative and in-depth research resources for student and teacher needs. You will find these databases listed on the PHHS Media Center webpage. For assistance with selecting and navigating these databases, please see a Media Specialist. To obtain access to these outside of school, our database log-ins are, User Name: parsippany, and Password: vikings.
• Equipment we have available: hovercams, Apple external DVD players, point-and-shoot digital cameras, multimedia mobile carts with data-projectors and audio speakers, a laminating process center, color and B&W printers, photocopiers and scanners.
• Topical books for your projects: We will gladly put together a customized cart of books for your students to utilize. Please e-mail book titles and DVD films you seek, or stop by and visit to communicate your needs. As well, books that are not in our collection can be supplied via the Public Library and requested, borrowed, and picked up at the Media Center. Just let us know what you'd like, and we will deliver it in a timely manner.
• Our e-book collection is brimming. Every year we’ve expanded and increased the number of titles in our e-book holdings. At present we have available 152,000 e book titles. These can be accessed at links on the Media Center webpage. Some of the ebook vendor links include MackinVIA, Salem Press, InfoBase, and Ebsco E-books.
• Open access to students: Students are welcome to visit during their lunch period to do research and complete assignments. In addition, the Media Center is open each day after school until 3:50 PM except when there are prearranged events and happenings.
• New for this calendar year: If you utilize video as a teaching tool we’ve acquired a subscription to Discovery Education where you will be able to access streaming video on-demand. Please email or see Media Specialists for individual teacher account codes.
• If you are in graduate school or pursuing additional professional development or certification studies we have print and periodical database resources specifically for your needs. The completion of many Masters Degrees and beyond have been supported by research inquiry at our Media Center.
Have great year of abundant library visits and information discovery everyone.
