Elementary Media Matters

News and Resources from the Elementary Media Centers

October 2015

Books, books, and more books!

Along with classes visiting the media centers, checking out books, listening to Young Hoosier book titles, and exploring new authors and illustrators, many media centers also hosted Scholastic Book Fairs. Students found some of their favorite books but also discovered new books that they want to read. The funds raised by these book fairs help bring new books to our students and staff. I plan to purchase books for teachers that will support the the curriculum maps and unit guides. Please be sure to add any book requests to your school's Mentor Texts: Support for Unit Guides and Collaborative Planning spreadsheet that was shared with everyone. I also came across the Teach Mentor Texts blog that has a huge collection of mentor texts to support both reading and writing.

Online Resources of the Month

World Book Online

World Book Online is provided to all MSD Warren Township students - both at school and at home. Please contact Elaine Loftus for login information.

As students begin to gear up for research projects, learn more about a country or location mentioned in a story they are reading, or want to compare and contrast animals, World Book Online is a great place to start. Besides articles, there are pictures, videos, audio clips, and tools to support all students. Text can be read aloud and translated. Students can use the citation tool to give credit to the source of information when using it in a presentation.

Kids Click - Kid Friendly Web Search Site

Students can search and find articles that show the reading level. I like the Dewey Decimal Search at the bottom. Students can also use the Quick Search for pictures, sounds, and video.
